Dr. Richard Haas was born and grew up in Williamsburg, VA. His education includes a BS in Physical Chemistry from the University of Virginia, a Master of Science degree in chemistry and molecular biology from the University of Illinois, Urbana. He attended medical school at the University of Virginia and did his pediatric residency at the University of Connecticut and the University of Virginia. Dr. Haas’ first practice was in rural Virginia at Big Stone Gap which is in Wise County in southwestern Virginia. He then practiced for ten years at the William Golden Clinic in Elkins, WV. Dr. Haas served as Chief of Medical Staff and Chief of Pediatrics at Memorial General Hospital in Elkins, WV. At that time, he was appointed to the West Virginia advisory committee on pediatric hemophilia and other bleeding disorders. He has published several scientific papers on topics such as infectious diseases, bowel disorders and infant circumcision as well as articles on the physical chemistry of psychiatric medications. He also practices as a pediatrician at the Tucker Psychiatric Pavilion. Dr. Haas, his wife Kathie, and their two sons Steven and Andrew returned to Virginia in 1986. He has practiced with the Pediatric Center since 1989. His sons attended Hampden Sydney College and his oldest son is an attorney practicing in Richmond. He is interested in boating and fishing and does volunteer work at his church.
