Dr. Richard N Podell has the following 2 specialties
- Internal Medicine
An internist is a physician who focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of conditions that affect the adult population—both acute and chronic.
These doctors are often who adults see as their primary physicians because they treat a broad range of illnesses that do not require surgical or specialist interventions. They also work to help a patient maintain optimal health in order to prevent the onset of disease.
In addition to treating the common cold and flu, internists also treat chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease.
- Family Medicine
A family practitioner is a doctor who specializes in caring for people of all ages, at all stages of life. Rather than focusing on the treatment of one disease or patient population, family practitioners are often the doctors that people see for their everyday ailments, like cold and flu or respiratory infections, and health screenings. When necessary, family practitioners will provide referrals for conditions that require the expertise of another specialist.
The doctors may also provide physicals, inoculations, prenatal care, treat chronic diseases, like diabetes and asthma, and provide advice on disease prevention.

I've been seeing Dr Podell for 3 years for fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. He is an internationally recognized expert and researcher in these fields. He also holds a M.S. in nutrition. I had been to several rheumatologists and other specialists before him, and he just blows them away in terms of deep knowledge and understanding of these illnesses. None of them even diagnosed my CFS. These illnesses are poorly understood, affect many body systems, and unfortunately there is no cure and no great drugs. Many of the most effective treatments involve lifestyle changes, of which his knowledge and guidance are extensive, including complementary therapies, nutrition/supplements, elimination diets, breathing techniques, meditation, PT, etc. He did extensive blood work in the beginning and focused in on the findings. Different tests than any other doctor had done. He informed me at the start that the treatment would involve trial and error as far as medications and supplements go, because only a fraction of patients respond positively to most. But he gave me hope and some real relief from my misery! No, he doesn't take insurance, but I understand why. It's because the conditions he treats are very complex, and he insists on spending the appropriate amount of time to really understand and spend a lot of time with each patient, which, as we all know, is not the way typical insurance-driven medicine works...with about 10 minutes allotted per patient. For his initial visit you complete a very detailed history (about 25 pages as I recall) in advance, and he books a ~2.5 hour initial visit. I have never had a doctor spend an entire morning with me before or since! He had clearly read and made notes on my history, which he reviewed with me in detail at my first visit. After the first visit, follow-ups are 30 minutes. While I sympathize with those who cannot afford the up-front charge for seeing him, with him you get what you pay for. I am able to submit his charges to my insurance myself and get reimbursed at the out-of-network rate. In addition to being brilliant and passionate about his work, he truly understands the suffering of his patients, which was a tremendous relief after all the misinformed doctors I'd seen before him, who had only very limited treatment options for me that were of very little help. He follows the current research in the field and has offered me cutting-edge treatments, which he then closely monitors with me. He has been very supportive of my needs for disability documentation, has referred me to other experts, and even collaborated with my disability attorney. I truly believe he was instrumental in making the case that let to approval of my private LTD benefits. No human is perfect, but this man is the closest I have come to my dream doctor in a very difficult medical field.
I went to this doctor twice . He takes no insurance. I received eight prescriptions and suggestions for diet..exercise. etc..I applied for disability and judge couldn't read his notes. I am out of $900. I still have the same issues and still in pain. Doesn't want to hear that you are struggling financially or cannot afford meds. Save your money.
am a 31 f who went to see Dr P. 10 times over the course of a year for treatment of CFS and fibro. Throughout the year, Dr. P prescribed me over 17 meds, all of which did nothing to make me better. These meds included, sleeping pills, nuvigil to wake me up, ADHD med, pain med etc. During my last appointment, I broke down crying asking if any of these drugs were actually going to help restore health in my body. His response, in an extremely condescending way, was that CFS has no cure and can only be managed by pain/ anxiety/ADHD meds. All the the meds he prescribed caused extreme addiction and withdrawal symptoms and did no treat the root cause(for me lymes).
Dr. Podell and Dr. King are the best, very professional and caring. I have been with them for 8 years now and when you are feeling lousy and having Fibromyalgia/CFS flare ups they are there for me and have a deep understanding and empathy for what we are going through. Three years ago I moved to NY and still travel to see both Podell and Dr. King in NJ because they know the process and can help adjust protocols toward getting me feeling my best again. Even more important is they research new treatments and have an ever growing and diverse set of treatment modalities (pharmaceuticals, biofeedback, breath, foods, supplements). Dr. Podell and Dr. King take the time to listen and are not afraid to try cutting edge treatments with the labs to validate progress. I am forever grateful to Dr. Podell and Dr. King for there help and knowing they will be there for me when I'm not feeling well. The peace of mind this brings is priceless.
