Dr. Robert William Murray, MD

Other doctors I've visited treated my labwork, not me. When my lab numbers were within "normal" ranges they considered their work done, even though I still wasn't feeling well. I'm so glad I sought a third opinion with Dr. Murray. He recognizes that targeting a broad range of "normal" (as measured across a broad range of people) is different than targeting what is *optimal* for any given individual. He is working with me to find where that optimal point is *for me* and adjusts treatment as needed to keep me there. In the 6 months since he started treating me I've noticed immense improvements in my energy levels, mood, and mental clarity. I'd been feeling "off" for so long I'd forgotten what it was like to feel good - but with Dr. Murray's help I am getting there. I'm very grateful for him!

Dr. Murray was my endocrinogist about 8 years in the 1990's when I first developed a goiter and went to him for treatment. I did have hypothyroidism, but due diligence was not followed to discover what TYPE of hypothyroidism. (Decades later after being on wrong doses 20 years I discovered it is transient hypothyroidism, not Hashimoto's.) Hashimoto's thyroiditis accounts for approximately 85% of hypothyroidism cases. I was very low energy and on too high a dose of anti-depressants from another doctor. Rather than look further into why I was so depressed and low energy, Dr. Murray and the psychiatrist continued to up and up and up my doses of both synthetic thyroid hormone (levothyroxine) and anti-depressants until I was thoroughly snowed. I lost a couple years of not being able to function until I sought out a more experienced endocrinologist who halved the doses of anti-depressants and levothyroxine so I could function again. Eventually other doctors tapered up and down to… discover the right dose which I have been on since. But, back in the 1990's Dr. Murray was making many presumptions without sufficient testing. He suggested I had pituitary hypothyroidism after only 3 standard tests. I asked him what could cause my pituitary to not function. He said flatly, "brain tumor, " then walked out of the room! This was back in 1997 and it was not so easy for lay people to get medical research, so we only had what doctors told us. Dr. Murray further increased my doses without considering the many other factors which could have caused my exhaustion. After 2 years not functioning I did get to other doctors and on reasonable doses of levothyroxine and anti-depressants. Now in 2016 my current doctors are wondering if psych meds actually caused the hypothyroidism and not recognizing its transience might have saved me from 20 years of depressive episodes. A good endocrinologist is KEY to correctly diagnose and treat endocrine issues before psych drugs cloud this issue and damage the endocrine system. Endocrinology is one of the most complex medical specialties. Research further than this site before deciding on your endocrinologist. Make sure all other doctors work closely with the endocrinologist because hormone levels effect every other system in the body. Without careful testing and thoughtful diagnosis, you could loose years by not being properly treated for your endocrine problems, depression, anxiety, low energy, and many other interrelated conditions.

I have complete faith in Dr. Murray. He is easy to talk to and gives you a sense he isn't just rushing through the visit.

Dr. Murray is fabulous. He treated me for Grave's Disease. He knew I was really sick and treated me immediately and logically. He was patient with me, as my grave's manifested itself in a lot of mental symptoms. He understood that I was reacting poorly to antithyroid medication and didn't waste time trying different ones. Within 2 months of diagnosis, I was having RAI treatment. Since then, I've surpassed what I used to consider "good health" and feel like a new person. I hear of other people struggling with Grave's Disease and I wish they knew this guy. Thanks Dr. Murray!

I wish there were more Dr. Murrays. He is highly knowledgeable, has great bedside manner. I've had to bring my toddler son and you know how annoying that can be, but his staff and the doctor took to him nicely without making me feel bad about it. I had to take "odd" dosages of thyroid medication by tweaking it myself and he was all for it since I can't tolerate what doses the companies make. He takes me seriously and helps a great deal. I will continue to go. Downside is...he's booked up, if you don't have him already, it'll be near impossible to become a new patient.
