More about Dr. Robi U Burns
Dr. Burns attended a small college in rural Texas, where her grandmother, her grandmothers father and his father got their undergraduate degrees in science. Naturally intrigued by science, she received a bachelors degree in Biology and Chemistry in 1991. Research at the Center for Human Nutrition, at the renowned University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, was the next logical step as she continued to clarify her lifes purpose. Subsequently, a passion to encourage woman to be active stakeholders in their healthcare evolved while Dr. Burns attended the University of Houston for post baccalaureate graduate study. Dr. Burns personal journey of empowerment continued as a medical student at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas (UTMB). During her years at UTMB she was involved in a variety of research projectsmost notably labor induction research. Dr. Burns earned her medical degree at the UTMB in 1998. Dr. Burns went on to a residency program in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois (CCH). The residency program at CCH emphasized high-risk obstetrics and complicated surgical procedures including combined trauma /obstetrics and gynecological care. She received numerous awards in medical student education and was held in high regard by not only her attending physicians but also her peers. She saw her passion for clinical teaching and community service come to fruition after residency when she and her husband, in lieu of a honeymoon, volunteered as medical missionaries in Kingston, Jamaica. The experience, fraught with limited resources in the midst of positive cultural influences, supported her philosophy that acknowledges, for many women, the answer to the question of wellness dwells somewhere between modern western medicine and natural pathways to wellbeing. Dr. Burns moved to Las Vegas in 2003. While practicing at a large OB./GYN group Dr. Burns recognized she wanted to practice a more personal brand of medicine. At that group she met a kindred spirit in her future partner Dr. Docasar. In the year that followed they developed the tenets of their practice, A Womens Place OB./GYN with the founding principle--for women by women. Today, the possibilities and pragmatics of this principle are ensconced in the nurturing and comfortable environment that greets women immediately as they pass through the front doors. That personal attention and special treatment follows every woman into her thoughtfully appointed examination room where she is greeted and attentively cared for. Dr. Burns facilitates a partnership approach with her patients by providing the medical knowledge to identify and diagnose that allows her patients to make informed and empowered decisions. Her patients are confident in her skills as a physician and comforted by her thoughtfulness as a person. Since 2004 she has been deeply involved in health care in the Las Vegas Valley serving as an educator, reformer and advocate. She enjoys public speaking and has facilitated numerous community seminars and workshops on womens healthcare issues. Personally she is an exemplary mother of two, a wife and a friend.
