Dr. Roshan Shrestha, MD

Dr. SHRESTHA and the rest of the Hepatology and transplant teams communications quite frankly suck. Dr. Shrestha Won't give you the time of day and never schedules any follow up visits with his patients. Case in point, my husband went in for a bile duct blockage and he placed stents. He got scheduled for an appointment two weeks later with another doctor. We assumed everything was ok and this was a routine follow up since we had heard nothing from Dr. Shrestha. We found ourselves walking into a liver transplant office and got blind sided with his Cholangiocarcinoma diagnosis. The doctor we saw was floored that no one had talked to us about it before the appointment. There are medications that Dr. Shrestha could have prescribed for my husband to help with the breakdown and thinning out of his bile to help improve biliary drainage and help to keep his biliary ducts from clogging up as much but he never prescribed them to my husband. By the time we found out about these… medications, it was too late to make a difference. Dr. Shrestha is not aggressive with treatment of patients with aggressive or terminal cancers such as cholangiocarcinoma but rather writes you off figuring you won't live long anyways. He takes a very reactive rather than proactive approach to treatment waiting until you are already jaundiced before scheduling you in to replace biliary stents and you end up going septic because he waited too long to get you in. He has no sense of urgency in giving treatment to his patients. He and the rest of the Hepatology department don't look at the bigger picture of treating each patient as an individual and giving them good quality individual care in effort to extend their lives. Rather, Dr. Shrestha and team treat you like a number and act as though you are a bother to them when you ask questions and are trying to get answers. And Dr. Shrestha is the head of the liver transplant team at Piedmont. If you have an aggressive or terminal cancer involving your liver and want a competent doctor who will be aggressive with your treatment in effort to extend your life as long as possible rather than write you off as having a death sentence, don't go to Dr. Shrestha or Piedmont Hospital. You are better off trying the Mayo Clinic, Cancer Treatment Centers of America, or possibly Emory. Thanks Dr. Shrestha for your lack of caring and lack of aggressiveness in treating my 53 year old husband, father of 3 boys. Because of your uncaring and reactive approach to treatment of aggressive/terminal cancers, my 3 sons will have to finish growing up without their father. Time is everything Dr. Shrestha. You have the ability to extend someone's life and improve their quality of life but you need to slow down and take some time to be with each of your patients to do so. There are many things you could have done to extend Mike's life but you didn't take the time to do so. It's too late for my husband but I hope the next patient you take on with Cholangiocarcinoma, you'll treat them as an individual human being instead of like a number. Maybe they will live longer and get to have more time to spend with their family than my husband got to. Rest in peace Michael Hunsaker. You didn't deserve to be treated the way you were treated by Dr. Shrestha or Piedmont Hospital. May other families get better care and treatment who go there in the future.
