More about Dr. Ruben Alberto Quintero

Dr. Quintero developed the field of operative fetoscopy to treat birth defects in utero via a minimally-invasive approach by designing surgical instruments and techniques.

He pioneered the selective laser surgery technique to treat twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) and the staging classification of TTTS that is used worldwide. He is one of a few physicians who performs laser surgery to correct the syndrome.

Dr. Quintero is known for creating the field of operative fetoscopy. He has invented several surgical procedures, including the selective laser photocoagulation of communicating vessels (SLPCV) technique to treat twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), umbilical cord occlusion for discordant anomalous twins, fetal cystoscopy, direct fetal laryngoscopy, lysis of amniotic bands, amniopatch and the percutaneous fetoscopic approach for the antenatal correctionof open spina bifida, among others.

He proposed the staging classification of TTTS that is used worldwide for this condition, as well as an ultrasound index to measure fetal lung, independent of gestational age (the Quantitative Lung Index). He has designed fetoscopic instruments and medical devices specifically for fetal therapy.

Dr. Quintero has authored more than 120 scientific papers as well as abstracts and book chapters. He is the editor of the first book on minimally invasive fetal surgery, Diagnostic and Operative Fetoscopy, published in 2002, and the editor of the first book on TTTS, Twin-Twin Transfusion Syndrome, published in 2007.

He is a member of the Editorial Board of The Journal of Maternal-Fetal and Neonatal Medicine and a peer reviewer for the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Journal of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Lancet, Prenatal Diagnosis, Fetal Therapy, among others.

Dr. Quintero is founder of the USFetus, a fetal therapy research consortium with over 45 publications. He is currently at The Fetal Institute in Miami, FL.
