Dr. Sean J. Evans, MD

Dr Evans saw my son who has epilepsy liver disease and autism. He had tenderly prescribed Zonisamide and we were simultaneously dealing with a head injury that my son sustained from a bike accident and a seizure that was triggered from the concussion. He fell and hit his head again with the seizure. The adverse side effects tea from Zonisamide overlap with many of the signs of head injury and a worsening that we were warned about called “post concussion syndrome”. My son lost almost 20 lbs in 3 weeks stopped being able to sleep for more than a few hours and became agitated confused dizzy and then had an episode of psychosis. I went into the follow up visit very concerned because I knew something was very wrong with him. Dr Evans mocked me from the moment I began talking. He talked over me and minimized everything I said. He got so angry when I insisted that he take this seriously and reiterated that Caleb was showing serious symptoms. He told us that “Caleb’s mental illness is none… of his concern”. Caleb isn’t mentally ill and he was sitting there looking at his chart so Dr Evans also knew that Caleb has no diagnosed mental illness. Caleb has autism. He’s sensitive to everything. The doctor said that everything was fine and told us to RAISE the dosage of Zonisamide. I was horrified at how he’d spoken to me and my son. At one point when I refused to let him talk over me, he looked as if he wanted to attack me. He psychically “bucked forward” like he was trying to get me to cower. I don’t cower. He was FURIOUS when he left the room as if I’d been rude with him. We filed a complaint and went home to take the raise dosage as he had advised. The next morning my son approached me saying “Mom it’s the medicine not the head injury”. We looked up “adverse reaction to Zonisamide” and the symptoms were EXACTLY what we’d told Dr Evans the day before. There’s no way he didn’t know what the adverse reactions to this medicine look like. It’s a standard reaction that’s seen in response to many anticonvulsant medications. He knew. Of course I called the office in a panic because Caleb was in a state of confusion and terror. He refused to leave the house and had to be near me at all times. He couldn’t sleep at all and could not eat. I was furious that we’d just described typical adverse response symptoms to a medicine that he recently prescribed and his response was for us to raise the dosage. I knew I couldn’t just take him off. That would trigger a seizure. I had to ween him off over the course of days and I needed a benzodiazepine to help in the transition so he didn’t have a seizure. No one from the office called me back. The Doctor never responded to Caleb’s horrible reaction and the fragile condition he was in. We were too afraid to go to the ER. Caleb was terrified of leaving the house and the ER could’ve triggered behavior or a reaction that resulted in him being placed in the psych ward. That would’ve destroyed him. I couldn’t take that chance. It was a Friday when this happened and we were left over the weekend with a very unstable 18 yr old kid who acted like a 5 yr old. I had to call his Psychiatrist and ask her for help getting Caleb on a benzodiazepine to protect him during the days we weened him off Zonisamide. No one ever called. I found at least 17 other patients who had been insulted and harmed by his reckless and abusive behavior. I sent every one of these reviews along with my complain to the UCSD patient experience Dept. They did their “investigation” and found him to have acted “appropriately”. Dr Evans will continue to harm patients. When he finally does enough damage to where he gets sued then feel free to contact me on FB at Jesse Turner-Hunter and I can provide you with all the emails and copies of the many other reviews detailing harm and insult. UCSD knows. They know because I sent it ALL to them as part of my complaint to show that this isn’t a coincidence and too many others have described similar stories. UCSD has been warned that they have an abuser in their ranks treating vulnerable neurology patients and I have proof that they know. If you need that proof I’m happy to give it to you. Don’t go see Dr Evans. There’s something dangerously wrong with him.

I'd give him zero stars if possible. If you're referred to this man, insist on seeing someone else! How he continues to keep his license is a mystery to me.

2 minutes ago Took my adult daughter there for severe shoulder pain. Been in bed for weeks. She is a clinical psychologist. He ran tests and nothing came to light. Told her she needed to look into psychological help. He wrote in her chart which her primary showed us that she is an opioid addict seeking pills! She went to pain management doctor and got nerve block and pain has been gone. What a travesty for a doctor to assume people are addicts when they are in pain. We thought HE could do a nerve block for her. Avoid this doctor.

Have been seeing Dr Evans for five years. He has always been responsive to issues.

I had to wait a month and a half to see him, for what was supposed to be an hour visit. He saw me for 11 minutes, and immediately told me I did not have GBS, which other doctors had diagnosed me with for years, with many tests. After I turned in a poor review at UCSD for the visit, he called me, and was very rude to me. He then made a report on the call he made to me, and LIED about what I had said to him. Whatever you do, DO NOT see this doctor!

I was referred by a different UCSD neurologist, who after staring at my face for approximately one minute or so, was told I might have myasthenias gravis (no questions were asked re symptoms), and bloodwork was done. It took months for the appt, and even longer for the results. During this time I had seen my regular neurologist who sated this was an incorrect diagnosis. After spending a small amt of time with Dr Evans that wasn't even addressed and I was told that because he had "no other explanation," I had Conversion Disorder. Like with the other poster, absurd!! Seems to be a "go to" differential diagnoses. That is now in my medical record which is beyond infuriating. Would not have bothered seeing him had I merely been given my lab results.

Receptionist kept confusing me with another patient, drawing the wrong chart, misfiled my payment and accused me of non-payment. Dr. Evans misdiagnosed me as having conversion disorder (absurd!). Ended up in the emergency - true diagnosis - thiamine deficiency.

My experience/treatment with Dr. Sean Evans and staff was completely unsatisfactory. I was being seen for fainting with POSSIBLE seizure like activity. I spent 20 min. in a consultation with Dr. Evans as he was supervising a very nervous intern, asking me routine questions and performing simple reflex testing. At the end of their analysis Dr Evans concluded with certainty that I had a seizure disorder. Upon asking him how he was so 100% sure his diagnosis was correct he responded "I am an expert in my field". He had not run ONE single test! Much of what he briefly described to me where complete assumptions. He never even asked when the last occurrence had happened, which was over a year ago. I was handed a prescription which I was to start taking immediately and for the rest of my life. He then told me he was reporting me to the DMV and my license would be revoked immediately. He said technically I should take a cab home. Through confusion and tears I felt insulted yet again when he… told me "I seemed like a pretty smart girl and would figure things out". I was abruptly asked to leave and left with no goodbye or any plan of action. After two other Doctors opinions I have been given a solid diagnosis that does not include a Seizure Disorder. I am completely safe to drive. However, because of Dr. Sean Evans over zealous diagnosis I am still fighting to get my license back.
