Dr. Shahnaz Malekan has the following 2 specialties
A psychiatrist is a doctor with specific training in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness.
He or she can not only provide the counseling necessary to both diagnose and treat a patient, but can also prescribe medication when needed. In some cases, a psychiatrist will only provide the medication and the counseling will be provided by another healthcare specialist, like a certified counselor or psychologist.
Like other doctors, psychiatrists employ diagnostic tools like CT scans and MRI in order to observe the structure and function of a patient's brain.
Once a diagnosis is made, these specialists may use behavior or cognitive therapy in order to address the patient's condition, or a multitude of other types of therapy, in conjunction with or in place of medication.
A neurologist is a physician who diagnoses and treats disorders of the nervous system which is comprised of the brain, spinal cord and nerves. These doctors do not perform surgery, but refer patients to neurological surgeons when they determine that surgical intervention is necessary.
Some of the conditions that neurologists diagnose and treat are epilepsy, aneurysms, hydrocephalus, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke, spinal disc herniation, and spinal disease.
In addition to using diagnostic tests like MRI, CT scans, EEG and EMG, neurologists also employ neurological testing to gauge muscle strength and movement, balance, reflexes, sensation, memory, speech, and other cognitive abilities.

I found it easy to talk to Dr. Malekan. She really wants to understand the patientâs issues before coming up with possible treatments. She carefully considers the whole patient, the physical as well as the mental. She is conservative in prescribing medications, taking great pains to ensure that she does no harm in the measures she takes to help the patient.
I am the legal guardian of my sister, whom Dr. Malekan had seen today. Without knowing her history, Dr. Malekan passed a snap judgement and prescribed powerful (Sertraline & Clonazepam) drugs for depression. My sister doesn't suffer from depression but rather impulse control and anger management issues. Dr. Malekan also did not bother to read my sister's case history before diagnosing her and prescribing the aforementioned drugs. This was evident in the fact that she demanded to know why my sister does not live with her parents. Had she bothered to read the extensive file on my sister, she would had read that the father has not been present since birth and that our mother had passed away in an automobile accident. The icing on the cake of all this is that Dr. Malekan also stated that my sister should not be living with me, that she is a poor child who is being forced to live with an obnoxious person and kept insisting that My sister's Raccoon eyes were the result of some injury (one can only assume that she was insinuating that I was abusing her) and not the result of allergies from staying at a relatives. The end result was being called an a-hole and hanging up on me without bothering to understand or learn what truly took place. It is my opinion that this is not a doctor to whom one should seek mental health from seeing as that the doctor is NOT a member of the AMA* and that she apparently has many issues herself. After all if a doctor of mental health cannot restrain themselves from using profanity within 10 minutes of a first conversation, how can one trust that doctor's judgement in anything? *The information contained in the AMA DoctorFinder report does NOT meet the primary source equivalency requirement as set forth in the credentialing standards of accreditation organizations such as the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) or the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA).Shahnaz Malekan , MD (Non-Member)Primary Specialty (Self Designated)( Self-designated practice specialties/areas of practice (SDPS) listed on the AMA Physician Masterfile have historically related to the record-keeping needs of the American Medical Association and do not imply "recognition" or "endorsement" of any field of medical practice by the Association. The fact that a physician chooses to designate a given specialty/area of practice on our records does not necessarily mean that the physician has been trained or has special competence to practice the SDPS. ): PSYCHIATRY
