More about Shane L Martin
Dr. Shane Martin is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon in Scottsdale, Arizona who specializes in minimally invasive joint replacement of the knee, hip, and shoulder.
Dr. Martin is a nationally recognized expert in robotic assisted joint replacement, and one of the most experienced: He has performed over 3,000 successful robotic MAKOplasty hip and knee minimally invasive joint replacement surgeries. Dr. Martin routinely treats patients with hip pain due to advanced osteoarthritis that is so severe that total hip replacement is indicated. There are several types of hip replacement.
The total hip replacement surgery Dr. Martin performs follows the protocol for anterior hip replacement. This minimally invasive approach to hip replacement cuts no muscles, reduces the risk of dislocation after surgery, speeds recovery, and results in no permanent precautions or restrictions. Patients can walk immediately after the procedure, which is done on an outpatient basis. Dr. Martin also treats patients with knee pain due to advanced osteoarthritis that is so severe that total knee replacement is appropriate.
Dr. Martin performs robotic assisted total knee replacement. The advantages of robotic knee replacement are less soft tissue injury during surgery, super-human accuracy drilling of the footprint for the implant, as well as less pain and faster recovery after surgery due to better fitting implants. A CT scan of the knee is obtained before surgery and the Mako computer creates a 3-dimensional model of your knee. During surgery markers are placed on your leg and your range of motion recorded. Using the model and your actual range of motion the implants that will provide you the best range of motion with the least pain can be identified. The cost of robotic knee replacement is comparable to traditional knee replacement.
Dr. Martin practices at Phoenix Spine and Joint, an outpatient surgery center. By having outpatient surgery patients avoid the risk of Covid-19 and other hospital acquired infections, hospital errors, as well as higher risk of deep venous thrombosis. Recovery take 2-3 weeks; and best of all, once recovered, patients have no permanent restrictions.
Dr. Martin’s hip replacement surgeries typically employ the use of the Mako robotic system:
