He completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the Memorial Hospital, University of Massachusetts Medical School and did Rheumatology training at the Mayo Clinic and Mayo Medical School in Minnesota.
Since 1984, Dr Lakhanpal has held academic positions at the Mayo Clinic and Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minnesota and subsequently at the University of Texas …Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and in Rheumatology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and also a Fellow of the American College of Rheumatology. He is a Founding Fellow of the American Rheumatism Association. He serves on the Editorial Review Panel of respected medical journals including the Annals of Internal Medicine and the Journal of Rheumatology. Dr Lakhanpal has over 100 publications including the New England Journal of Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, Arthritis & Rheumatism, Annals of Rheumatic Diseases, Journal of Rheumatology and many others.
Dr Lakhanpal’s excellence in Rheumatology has been recognized by his peers. He has received the American Rheumatism Association Senior Rheumatology Scholar Award, the Philip Schowalter Hench Award at Mayo Clinic and Mayo Graduate School of Medicine and the American Rheumatism Association Fellows Award. He was honored by the Greater Dallas Indian American Chamber of Commerce with its Award for outstanding contributions in Medicine, Science and Technology. He was named Alumnus of the Year for 2004 by his Alma Mater the King George’s Medical College, University of Lucknow, India. He has been listed in the Best Doctors in America since 1996. He was named a Texas Super Doctor in 2004. He was listed in the Marquis Who’s Who in the World Millennium Edition in 2000.
Dr Lakhanpal has held several Leadership positions. He currently Chairs the Government Affairs Committee of the American College of Rheumatology. He has served on various committees of the American College of Rheumatology in the past. He was President of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin [AAPI] from 2003-04. The AAPI is the largest ethnic medical association in the United States and represents over 40,000 physicians of Indian origin in this country. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Arthritis Foundation [North Texas] and the Medical Advisory Board of the Lupus Foundation of America [Dallas]. He has served on the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas.
On a personal note, Dr Lakhanpal has run a marathon in under three hours. He played basketball for his College and University. He is an avid tennis player and enjoys traveling.
