III Sidney Brown Barnes

Sidney Barnes, MD, FACS, is a General Surgeon with LewisGale Physicians, bringing more than 30 years of experience to the Southwest Virginia region. Prior to joining LewisGale, Dr. Barnes served as the Chief of Surgery and the Director of the Non-opioid Pain Management Program at McCready Health in Crisfield, Maryland. He earned his medical degree from New York University, followed by a surgical internship and residency at the Graduate Hospital of University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, where he was the Chief Surgical Resident. Prior to medical school, Dr. Barnes graduated with honors from University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry and English. | Dr. Barnes is certified in General Surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS) and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He has researched and presented on numerous surgical topics, including substance and opioid abuse awareness and advances in diagnosing and treating breast cancer. In addition, Dr. …Barnes is an active member of the American Medical Association (AMA), and a recipient of the Resident Achievement Award, presented by the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons. | Dr. Barnes is married and has 5 grown children. When not treating patients, he and his wife enjoy spending time outdoors camping, backpacking, gardening, and fishing.
