Dr. Stanley L Cohan has the following 2 specialties
A neurologist is a physician who diagnoses and treats disorders of the nervous system which is comprised of the brain, spinal cord and nerves. These doctors do not perform surgery, but refer patients to neurological surgeons when they determine that surgical intervention is necessary.
Some of the conditions that neurologists diagnose and treat are epilepsy, aneurysms, hydrocephalus, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke, spinal disc herniation, and spinal disease.
In addition to using diagnostic tests like MRI, CT scans, EEG and EMG, neurologists also employ neurological testing to gauge muscle strength and movement, balance, reflexes, sensation, memory, speech, and other cognitive abilities.
A psychiatrist is a doctor with specific training in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness.
He or she can not only provide the counseling necessary to both diagnose and treat a patient, but can also prescribe medication when needed. In some cases, a psychiatrist will only provide the medication and the counseling will be provided by another healthcare specialist, like a certified counselor or psychologist.
Like other doctors, psychiatrists employ diagnostic tools like CT scans and MRI in order to observe the structure and function of a patient's brain.
Once a diagnosis is made, these specialists may use behavior or cognitive therapy in order to address the patient's condition, or a multitude of other types of therapy, in conjunction with or in place of medication.

Dr Cohan is so professional. He takes his job seriously and gave a complete exam every time I saw him. I've had about 10 different neurologists over the years in different cities, and he is the only one to do so. I would still see him if I hadn't moved away. I would go back to him again in a heart beat if I lived there.
Recently diagnosed With MS after a major lapse. He was the only neurologist that presented a recovery plan without hesitation. He is decisive, gifted, and humane. After our first visit I had a clear understanding of the disease as well as the approaches to recovery and living with the disease. I found him receptive to my opinions and he thoroughly answered both mine and my families list of questions.
This man is gruff and is very judgemental of his patients. I was there with my family member, who has MS, and Dr. Cohan completely shot down her desire to have alternative treatment (along with the treatment she was receiving from him.) Instead of respecting her decision and supporting her (after all....it was only harmless acupuncture treatment), he arrogantly informed her not to waste her time and money on such nonsense. I was shocked....and she walked out feeling as if her bubble had been burst. She had found an acupuncturist who specialized in MS and other conditions...and at the very least the treatment could have helped her relax and feel empowered. But she trusted Dr. Cohan's and felt so devastated when he shared his closed-minded attitude. Why couldn't he just tell her "good for you" or "I hope it helps you feel better! Keep us posted!" I encouraged her to leave his practice and get over to the OHSU MS Clinic...and she did just that. Thank God. Maybe now she'll get some support and respect. No matter how much knowledge a doc has, if they aren't going to support their patients emotionally and respect their choices, they aren't worth much, in my opinion. Stay away from this doc.
These are only my opservation and opinions. He forms an opinion or diagnosis of a patient and will not hear anything the patient might think or try to say. Thinks he's a God in his little white doctor's jacket that he wears at all times. Has some sort of in (financial? or on a Board?) with Tysabri. I have spoken to newly dx MSers getting infused with Tysabri. Also spoke with patients who are on Avonex and being infused with steroids for over three years. He never told them about the dangers of long term steroid use. He is the only MS Neurologist with the HMO I and a good portion of Portland belong to. I would rather see a Neurologist who see many different type of cases, who is open, listen to me, and takes the time necessary, when needed.
