Dr. Stephen Ping-Hong Chen, MD

I rarely leave reviews, but after years of dealing with this office, I feel it’s necessary to share my experience with Stephen P. Chen in Monterey Park. A family member has been a patient here for years, visiting 2–3 times annually. Unfortunately, every interaction—especially something as simple as requesting a prescription refill—turns into an exhausting and frustrating process. Each time we need a refill, we have to call repeatedly, often many times, just to get through. The doctor is frequently unavailable when needed, and communication from the office is extremely unreliable. The front desk experience is particularly disappointing. It’s very difficult to reach anyone, and when you do, the service is unhelpful and unprofessional. We have been told multiple times over the phone that a prescription was sent to the pharmacy, only to find out that nothing was ever received. This leads to ongoing delays and unnecessary stress, especially when medication is time-sensitive. Overall, it… feels like there is a serious lack of accountability in this office. There is little follow-through, poor communication, and no sense of urgency or care for patients’ needs. Both the doctor and office management seem disengaged, and the practice does not operate at the standard you would expect from a medical office. After years of dealing with these recurring issues, I would not recommend this provider.

Dr. Chen has been an absolute godsend since he took over the care of my father when he recently transferred to an LTAC. My family's main priority in finding a doctor who would oversee his critical, long term care and respiratory rehabilitation were: 1) Specialty knowledge 2) Accessibility 3) Responsiveness 4) Patience (not rushing explanations or listening to concerns) DR. CHEN CHECKS EVERY BOX. The time he takes to follow-up and to take necessary medical actions is incredible considering the limited time doctors have on a daily basis, yet he manages to, and without ever making us feel like we are a burden. So grateful my dad ended up in this doctor's care. Thank you for all that you do to support us and our dad during such a stressful time for our family!

I've only had positive encounters with Dr. Chen during my hospitalization and subsequent appointments. Dr. Chen is extremely competent, has an excellent bedside manner and is very articulate (an absolutely rare skill missing in today's medical community). It is so unfortunate that linguistic and proper social skills are not contagious because the staff at Reliant Pulmonary seriously needs to be infected with a competency virus. Moreover, the staff hardly speaks English and when they do attempt to speak English, it is unintelligible. I would imagine that the staff is responsible for the loss of significant amounts of business because their behavior provides no positive overlay and instead taints and stains what is otherwise excellent medical care.

he is well done for patient. and a lot patient in there. but anyway his very busy. because not a lot these doctor. so will waiting longtime.

This guy rushes through things and then misdiagnoses me and I had to suffer afterwards. Would have been better to go to someone else in the first place. I still have chest pain from breathing that never went away

The most memorable moment when this ignorant doctor told me that if I allow the Garfield medical center perform surgical procedure on my sick mother that it will extend her life he was so convincing I allowed him to do it big mistake you had order so many medications that stopped her heart you know what you did doctor and one day I'll get justice.

Dr. Chen went above and beyond his duty to care for my dad. Of the 8 or so doctors who treated my dad in the hospital, Dr. Chen was the only one who took the time to explain the test results to us. He even arranged for other specialists to come for treatment. He seemed to really care about his patients and he is extremely skilled at what he does. My dad has never met a better doctor than Dr. Chen.

Very unfriendly front desk people. During the time I was waiting at wait room, I have seen the front desk lady trying to ask the patient to leave because they forgot the referral letter . Both patients got upset becaused they made the appointments over 30 days ago and confirmed with the lady over the phone that the office got the referrals. Well, I guess the front office people ruined all the good services that dr. Chen try to give to his patients!
