Dr. Stephen Lanier Coleman, MD

Wow I am shocked he is still allowed to practice. I had a friend who saw him as a patient and she was completely unhappy with his antics. She was misdiagnosed and had to see another physician who was shocked he had missed something so evident. He continues to call her almost every week apologizing. Looking at some of his reviews, I think he is calling her for other reasons. Give it up doc you need to retire from medicine and chasing the skirts.

Absolutely worst experience. I read he had personal issues and spoke with a nurse that used to work with him. She confirmed he had many issues but my wife wanted to use him. Big mistake...he will not stop calling my wife.

Horrible... This man should not be allowed to practice medicine. I was misdiagnosed and almost died when he was practicing at St. Vincent's Hospital. I was later told it was during the time he was having an affair with a nurse that worked in his office and he was not thinking clear since his affair had been discovered. His partners saved my life. Thank goodness he is no longer in practice with his original partners.

When I went to see him, he blew me off. He mocked me when he saw my list of medications--I kind of got the feeling that he was insinuating that my problem was in my head. When I explained my history, his remark was, "Well, I guess there is something wrong." I didn't know about his personal problems. I would say that objectively, he has very poor bedside manner. You can do your residency at Mayo and still be a bad doctor.

My doctor got me an appointment with Dr Coleman, as I needed one quickly. I went to him, he listened to me and ordered a CT scan, I got that done right away. Two days later his nurse called me that my scan had shown a thickening of colon and I should get a colonoscopy, she gave me appointment in a few days. After I came out of colonoscopy, he came in and said he had found a tumor and I needed surgery. He had a surgeon come by to talk to me while I was still on bed. Surgeon made an appointment with me for Monday (this was on Friday) I had Surgery in two days. I did have colon cancer. I appreciate that Dr Coleman took care of me, He did it in professional manner and in timely manner.

I wrote a review when he first moved to Fairhope but it is not listed here. He was THE absolute worst doctor in 3 states and specialties I have ever been to! I know nothing of his personal life only that he did not treat me. It was the holidays, and I was so ill. He didn't even do an exam, just sat across from me at his desk telling me he had been pushed out of practice with other docs in B'ham and were liking the move. In between the lines of his statements I read wanting to "hob nob", be of service to folks with financial means, find a church with same, have substantial home, office and life. Me, the patient....last in line. Ordered some tests and gave script for antibiotic. When I called few days later for test results as I was still so ill....the rude receptionist said he was out of the office until after new year. When I asked to speak to a nurse then, she replied there was no one in to speak to. When I asked what I was to do without information or guidance, she… stated if I was that bad I should go to an emg rm! What? And have them run the same tests and refer me back to doc that isn't there? He is a narcissisist, uncaring human who apparently forgot his oath and is concerned only in his riches. God forbid anyone ever really need a real doc and he is the only one available! Great for the lady who wrote review he was good to/for her; the rest of us who take the time and effort are trying to spare anyone from him and his unprofessionalism as a physician when Fairhope IS blessed with genuinely caring and knowledgeable physicians and staff's. I wouldn't have him perform a colonoscopy on my pet....certainly NOT on a human who he treats at his convenience. By the way, that was 5 yrs ago and I still warn anyone considering finding a doc that asks me for a reference.....NOT "Coleman"! Thankfully, I'm still here to write a neighbor referred me to her Doc...who referred me to surgeon for immediate surgery....saving my life and no colostomy bag!

I have been in Dr. Coleman's office and found the experience a 4 star rating. His staff could not have been more friendly and helpful with my insurance. Dr. Coleman was extremely attentive and got me the care i needed after discovering cancer in my colon. I found it upsetting after having such a good experience with Dr. Coleman, that people can put information slandering a professional without their name. You are not able to defend the accusations and would hate for someone to do that to my profession. He is an outstanding and very well qualified doctor to whom I am greatly in his debt.

Total lack of concern, and unable to diagnose problem. No communication.
