Dr. Steven Alter, MD

I fell while roller blading and completely shattered my wrist. Dr. Alter was AMAZING to work with! I cannot recommend him enough. While it was a difficult recovery, I did fully regain complete movement in my wrist. I would trust him completely with any future surgeries and recoveries.

I highly recommend Dr. Alter and his office. The staff is friendly and efficient. Dr. Alter is very skilled and knowledgable. Explains everything thoroughly, listens to the patient and answers all questions. Fantastic job taking care of my fractured wrist.

"4 appointments and all 4 times he tried sending his nurse to see me. He informed me last month that "Surgery is definitely an option, but none are currently being scheduled due to the coronavirus. So, let's give you another cortisone shot(3rd) to help until then" That was the best news I heard in years! But then....... I went to my scheduled appointment today and he told me "surgery isn't an option. I don't believe it's going to help you" Yet, it would have been scheduled the last visit if it were not for the coronavirus? At least the Dr. provided me with some humor. Good luck to anyone seeing this doctor."

The first time I saw Dr. Alter was very brief, before even speaking with me, he walked in the room, gave me a pamphlet on De’Quervians tendinosis, told me to read it and left the room. While he was in the hallway I could actually hear him arguing loudly with another staff member about my diagnosis, which was fairly off putting. Then he came back in the room and told me it could be either De’Quervian’s Tendinosis or I could have dislocated my thumb (which is what my GP recommended me for), he treated me with a cortisone shot and scheduled a follow up 6 weeks later. When I came back for the follow up my thumb and wrist was hurting again, and I assumed I could just get another shot, so I asked about it, but he said I could only get one more shot and it wasn’t a good option so soon. Then he asked “didn’t you read the pamphlet?” He gave me another pamphlet and left the room again. I read it again assuming I must have missed some crucial point the first time. The pamphlet stated that… De’Quervian’s is caused by overuse and repetitive movement, and could be treated with anti-inflammatory medication, cortisone shots or surgery. He came back in the room and asked if I had any questions, I started to make a general statement “well it’s not like I can quit my job, so…” he cut me off and very defensively said “I never said that!” maybe he mistook me, but I wasn’t trying to accuse him of that, I was only trying imply that the overuse that causes De’Quarvians wasn’t really something I could avoid. I finished my statement by explaining, that I couldn’t stop the overuse and asked him what my options were down the road. He told me that sometimes tendinosis just happens for no reason, which isn’t in his little pamphlet by the way. Also, if he had just said that initially it would have saved us both a lot of time and frustration. He told me that my options were to get another cortisone shot and if that didn’t work then we would have to do a small surgery. I asked him what the small surgery was, and he replied, “I didn’t offer it to you”. I told him that I didn’t actually want the surgery, but I just wanted to know what it entails. Needless to say, I’m going to get second opinion, regardless. The fact is this guy’s demeanor says it all, he doesn’t care about his patients and for that reason there’s no way he’s getting near me with a knife.

I shattered my wrist in a roller blading injury. Dr Alter did an amazing job with my care and the surgery itself. I have 100% use of my hand today. He is very well known in Chelmsford as a great option for hand/wrist injuries and many of my friends and associates have used him with great success. Would absolutely use him again and refer him to my loved ones.

Careful to treat the patient, and yet clear & direct- making sure that each patient's experience is thorough and complete (and in such a short visit so you can get back to your busy life!) And it is not just him, he has created both a highly functioning system for patient care (like nothing I have seen before) and a staff that is over-the-top qualified, caring and committed to high-quality care at a fraction of the patient's time!

I had 2 surgeries on my finger, so I was in and out of Dr. Alter's office for a whole year, I was so happy with the way I was treated from everyone in the office. Everything from scheduling to insurance, x-rays, nurses and Dr. Alter and his NP Roula I couldn't have asked for better treatment. Dr.Alter is an all business and gets right to the point kind of doctor- no sugar coating here, but was amazing I would recommend him in a heartbeat to anyone. I was was made to feel very comfortable in a situation that was a little nerve racking. Bottom line I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Alter!

i had my wrist re-broken by excel in 13 then waited 6 months and found steven, and her did surgery on my wrist and i was very satisfied with his work.
