Dr. Thomas Kou Hei

I have been seeing this provider for nearly four years. Throughout that time, I found his care to be mediocre at best. However, it wasn’t until I began experiencing a serious medical issue—episodes of syncope that led to frequent falls and severe injuries including 19 fractured ribs, multiple spinal fractures, and a broken neck—that I fully understood the extent of his dismissiveness. Rather than acknowledging the complexity of my condition, he chose to assume my symptoms weren’t real, simply because he couldn’t explain them. Without ever discussing his concerns directly with me, he made damaging assumptions—that I was intentionally harming myself in pursuit of opioids for pain relief. He took it a step further by placing harmful notations in my medical record, which ultimately created significant barriers to care and denied me the support I urgently needed.

Dr. Hei is a great primary care doc. He is patient, compassionate and responsive to requests both in person and through the UW ecare email system. He is easy to get appointments with and very knowledgeable.
