Dr. Thomas Andrew Oetting, MD

Had an operation in 2022 and had 20/20 vision in my only good eye and the lens had slipped I needed a procedure to replace that lens. I left there with 20/150 vision. My eye sight in my ONLY GOOD eye was ruined! He damaged my retina and cornea which needed a partial transplant. Think twice before having any procedures done there! Thankfully after 3 years the doctors in Peoria have given me better vision - 20/70, but my life will never be the same. The rating should be 0 stars!

I went to Iowa City and Dr. Oetting with 20/20 vision in my only good eye, but with the lens lose. I left there with 20/150 vision, a retina pucker, and a damaged cornea. He and their “retina specialist” specialist Dr. Russell suggested another surgery, but I wanted a second opinion FOR SURE! They tried to pass my lack of sight to MD which others say I do not have. It has been a long slog and thanks to the fine retina doctor and optometrist in my area my sight is slowly returning and have avoided further surgeries in my only good eye. I am afraid it may never be what it was pre Iowa City, but it is better. Please beware of these two!

Dr. Oetting is a brilliant surgeon, and is extremely kind, and compassionate. I definitely recommend him. The nurses and other staff were also awesome. This surgery has greatly improved my life.

Dr. Oetting is a cataract specialist at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. I was fortunate enough to meet him after I sustained trauma to my right eye and lost all vision in it. Dr. Oetting was able to completely restore vision in my right eye! He is extremely personable and (one of my favorite traits in a doctor) is willing to discuss his personal life if asked. (To me this shows openness and honesty) In addition to being personable, he is an extremely skilled surgeon. My case was not what you call typical and he was able to replace my lens flawlessly. He also lets his patients email him with any questions they may have and he is very prompt about answering them. Now that my surgery is complete the next step will be trying to see if I can get my insurance company to cover a surgery to implant a prosthetic iris. Dr. Oetting told me that insurance may not cover this, but he was willing to fight the whole way with me if it could lead to good outcome. Overall, Dr. Oetting is… an extremely skilled surgeon, is very personable, and willing to go the extra mile with his patients. I would recommend him to absolutely anyone in need of cataract surgery! I would not be where I am today without him!

Dr Oetting greatly improved my vision and quality of life. For years I haven't been able to see colors properly and his groundbreaking surgery provided be both clarity, improved vision, and color perception enhancement. Highly reccommend!

Bad doctor. Bad experience. Dr. Oetting waited until one minute before surgery to tell me he was implanting a different lens that would not let me see as well as the lens he had promised. Also, he implanted a capsular tension ring in my eye without even bothering to tell me about it before or after the surgery. The capsular tension ring is very uncomfortable and irritates my eye. As a result, I wound up with acute PVD two days after surgery. Now, my eye is really screwed up. Wish I'd never met Dr. Oetting. My opinion is to run away from this guy as fast as you can.
