- Orthopedic Surgery of the Spine
If you have a back injury or unexplained back pain, your doctor might refer you first to a radiologist and then to an orthopedic spinal surgeon. They specialize in the spine and can diagnose and treat spinal diseases such as scoliosis. They can also treat spinal injuries such as a displaced disc or a fracture, as well as disc degeneration and narrowing that occurs due to aging.
However, when your injury or condition affects the spinal canal or spinal cord, it’s typically better to consult with a neurosurgeon. It's worth noting that, while they're both referred to as surgeons, they can also recommend treatments that don't require an operation, such as non-surgical decompression therapy.
- Orthopedic Surgery
An orthopaedic surgeon is a physician who specializes in diagnosis and surgical treatment of injuries and disorders involving the musculoskeletal system, such as hip replacements and arthroscopic knee surgery.
In addition to treating trauma to the musculoskeletal system, these doctors also deal with sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors and congenital disorders.

My spinal surgery, from initial consultation through 12-week check-up and discharge has been wonderful. Dr. Hsu's "bedside manner" is outstanding, explaining everything that was going to happen, and what I might expect along the way. The morning of surgery he went out of his way to walk over to my wife and explain to her how well things had gone, answer her questions, and generally help keep her calm and at peace. I have already recommended Dr. Hsu to a couple of friends, one of whom scheduled and completed her spinal surgery based upon my recommendation and her comfort level with him. He is a credit to his profession, and to the Rothman organization.
After too many years to count living with severe and debilitating back pain due to severe spinal stenosis and being unable to walk or stand for long periods of time, I met with Dr. Hsu on options available to me. Surgery was the only option. Dr. Hsu made a difficult decision easy and the pain that I lived with for years is gone. After 9 months post surgery I am able to move around easily. Best decision and best doctor. I would highly recommend Dr. Hsu to anyone who has back problems. He makes you feel like you are his only patient, takes times to explain everything and is terrific.
Dr. Hsu was recommended to me by a dear friend. I love her like a sister. I've had stenosis for years but not to the degree I had it in the last month. I made appts. With 2 surgeons, the first one told me he could do surgery in 2-3 weeks. I saw Dr. Hsu the next day & when he saw how I was suffering with pain throughout my leg ( from the left hip all the way down to the ankle.) he sched. me on a Wed. after seeing me on Fri. morning.. He treated me with respect and caring. I would not hesitate to recommend Dr. Hsu to anyone in agony I was with this spinal issue.
