Summary
My Profession
As an Emergency Physician, I diagnose and treat conditions resulting from sudden illness or injury. I see pediatric, geriatric patients and everyone in between. I am also here in case you can not reach your doctor or obtain care anywhere else.
My Practice
I work at both the Roseville and Morse Avenue emergency departments. I usually spend more time in Roseville because I live in the area. In a typical day, I see about 15-18 patients in 10 hours, ranging from a simple sore throat to severely ill patients with multiple medical problems--and every now then, I resuscitate people.
My Practice Philosophy
Emergency medicine is probably the only specialty where on a daily basis, a couple of minutes can mean the difference between life and death. I try to be efficient, work fast and see the sickest people first. But no matter how sick you are, you will get the best and most thorough care from me. A mentor once told me: "treat every patient as if he or she were a member of your …family." That, in short, is my practice philosophy.
My Tenure With Kaiser Permanente
I came to Kaiser Permanente in 1999, right out of residency. Having gone to school and worked in Northern california since 1988, this was coming home for me. I have known the Kaiser system first as a patient then as a medical student at UC Davis; I was ecstatic when the opportuniy became available to join TPMG.
Why I Like Practicing Medicine at Kaiser Permanente
At Kaiser, we have vast resources available to us. As ED physician, I only see patients briefly; it is important to me that my patients have good follow-up care. No where else that I know of that can book follow-up appointments directly from the ER. The organizations has made tremendous improvements in providing access to specialized care. Most of all, we have a great group of people in the ED. I enjoy coming to work everyday.
My Personal History
Occasionally, the ER gets so busy and hectic that I tell people, "this is starting to look like a refugee camp." I should know. I came from one. My family came from Viet-Nam as part of the "boat people" wave; that was 24 years ago, so I am not that fresh-off-the-boat anymore. I went to high school and college in Ohio, moved to California, worked for a while, then attended UC Berkeley and UC Davis. I am married and have three children.
