Dr. Collier was appointed vice chair in 1994, and in 2004 she also assumed the role of chief of the Section of General Internal Medicine at Christiana Care. She served as the residency program director for Internal Medicine from 1992 to 2005.
She attended the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Baltimore, and performed her medical internship and residency on the Osler Medical Service at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, where she also completed a fellowship in nephrology. She was in private practice from 1980 to 1989 in Chestertown, Md. Because of a desire to teach, she joined Christiana Care in 1989 as director of the Fourth Year Student Program in the Department of Medicine. She also received an academic appointment that year at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, where today she is an associate professor of medicine.
She received the 2003 Leon A. Peris Memorial Award of Jefferson Medical College for excellence in clinical teaching and for being an exemplary role model in academic …medicine. She was among the first 10 program directors in the U.S.—and the only internal medicine program director—to receive the Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach award in 2002, the first year in which it was presented by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). ACGME established the award to recognize outstanding program directors in graduate medical education. Selection criteria included "a demonstrated commitment to education with evidence of successful mentoring, program development and improvement."
Dr. Collier is currently a regent of the American College of Physicians (ACP), the governing board for the national organization of internists.
