A pediatrician is a doctor who specializes in the regular care of children, as well as the diagnosis and treatment of illness in children. Young patients are often more complicated to treat because they are still growing and developing.
While pediatricians may sub-specialize in specific therapy areas like oncology, surgery, ophthalmology, and anesthesiology, in general, pediatricians provide services like vaccinations, health exams, and treatment of common ailments and injuries. In addition, pediatricians are trained to handle the complex emotional and behavioral issues faced by children, especially during puberty.
Pediatricians normally see their patients from birth until the age of 18, although some may agree to treat patients into their early 20s, if requested.
- Pediatric Gastroenterology
Pediatric gastroenterologists can treat a variety of diseases and conditions in infants and children related to their liver, pancreas or intestines. If your child has severe or recurrent abdominal pain, constipation or diarrhea, a pediatric gastroenterologist can help you get to the bottom of it. They can also help identify the many possible causes of failure to thrive in infants.
Other common conditions they treat include Crohn's Disease, inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease, short gut syndrome and hepatitis C, as well as nutritional disorders like celiac disease and lactose intolerance. In order to diagnose and treat your child’s condition, gastroenterologists can perform colonoscopies and other diagnostic testing before deciding on the best treatment plan.

Dr Belnap took care of my Son many years ago for Crohn's Disease at Henry Ford Hospital, my son was about 13 or 14, he is now 34. We were so saddened to hear of his passing. He was such a great Compassipnate Doctor, he helped calm out fears. My heart goes out to his Family, he left us way too soon. We will always remember him fondly!
He was the most wonderful, caring and intuitive doctor I have ever met. Loved the fact that he could calm a scared family, that he addressed the child as well as the parents - I can't say enough about how much I appreciated him, his wisdom, his bedside manner and his smile. I don't know why he had to leave us so soon, except I really came to understand the phrase "only the good die young" when we lost him. Irreplaceable to this day.
He was the first doctor who ever explained to both my child and I what was happening to his little body. He was the friendliest doctor I had ever met. He went out of his way to get an another specialist to see my son, Even though the other dr. did not take our insurance. dr. belknap got him to see my son anyway. Above and beyond!!
So sad to hear of Dr. Belknaps passing :( my son has been going to see him his entire life even though he is 5. Dr. Belknap had the best bedside manner I have ever seen!! He was someone who chose the right profession in PEDS! He knew how to comfort a scared child/parent and explain everything and care about what he was talking about!! He loved to teach and have parents understand what exactly was going on inside these little bodies. He was a great Dr and will be missed dearly throughout his profession!! Thoughts and prayers go out to all!
