Dr. Zhiyuh Chang, MD

I am sharing my experience to help other patients make informed decisions. During my prenatal care with Dr. Chang, I experienced poor communication, unprofessional bedside manner, and interactions that caused significant and unnecessary stress late in pregnancy. At my visit, Dr. Chang suggested that I was measuring small, despite the fact that multiple other providers I had seen throughout my pregnancy consistently told me that I was measuring appropriately and that everything looked good. This conflicting information was presented without clear explanation and caused immediate anxiety. Subsequent ultrasound results confirmed that my baby’s growth and weight were within normal range, which made the initial concern feel unnecessarily alarming. As part of this visit, I was sent to Labor and Delivery to be evaluated. While I understand that caution can sometimes be appropriate, this referral ultimately resulted in normal findings and added a great deal of stress and fear during an… already physically and emotionally vulnerable time. Concerns were also raised indirectly about my prescribed ADHD medication, which I have taken throughout this pregnancy and a prior pregnancy with approval from multiple physicians. Despite this documented history, Dr. Chang questioned whether I was taking non-prescribed amphetamines. This felt accusatory and stigmatizing, especially without acknowledgment that the medication was prescribed and previously cleared, and without a clear explanation of clinical concern. After the appointment, I later discovered chart notes referencing neonatal withdrawal symptoms and a plan for weekly NSTs that were not clearly discussed with me during the visit. Learning about these items through documentation rather than a direct, informed conversation caused significant distress. My reassuring ultrasound and lab results were also not clearly communicated during the appointment. In addition to communication issues, Dr. Chang’s bedside manner felt disrespectful. On more than one occasion, she moved my shoes out of her way using her feet rather than asking me to move them, which felt inappropriate and unprofessional in a clinical setting, particularly while pregnant. I was also concerned about confidentiality. While waiting in an exam room, I could clearly hear Dr. Chang speaking loudly with another patient in a nearby room, including personal details about that patient’s weight and menopausal status. These conversations were audible from my room, which raised serious concerns about patient privacy. Finally, there were scheduling issues that added to my distress. I was checked in and waiting for my appointment when another patient who arrived afterward was taken back and seen before me without explanation. While I understand that clinics can run behind, the lack of communication around this change contributed to feeling overlooked and anxious. Overall, I left this experience feeling judged, overwhelmed, and unsupported rather than reassured and informed. While my pregnancy itself was documented as normal and my baby’s growth was appropriate, the way concerns were raised, the lack of clear communication, confidentiality issues, and unprofessional conduct resulted in a great deal of unnecessary stress. Patients deserve respectful, non-stigmatizing care, clear explanations, and a sense of safety- especially during pregnancy
