I had about a hour long initial consultation with Dr. Byrd. The entire appointment was a series of questions, and he never said anything about my reasons for being in the appointment (I was separated from my husband) or anything affirming or positive at all. By his line of questioning, I felt he wanted me to feel something was wrong with me. For example, I did not have any pertinent diagnosis but he asked me several times if I had ever had manic episodes, sounding surprised even that I had not had them. He even asked me if I had had a history of nightmares due to past trauma, when I had given no indication of having nightmares. It felt like if I continued care with him, I might start to think I have problems that I never had. I also wished he had said something -- anything really -- about the separation from my husband, the reason for the visit, but he never did. He just referred me out to a therapist at the clinic at the end of the visit and then called me in the evening saying… he forgot to schedule our follow-up visit.
