Dr. Achala Sameer Vagal, MD

Achala Vagal, MD, has been a neuroradiologist at the University of Cincinnati Neuroscience Institute and an assistant professor of Neuroradiology at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine since 2007. She is also currently a consultant neuroradiologist at the Veterans Administration Medical Center. Dr. Vagal has received several honors and awards including the National Talent Scholarship, and the University of Cincinnati Young Investigator Recognition Award. Dr. Vagal was awarded the prestigious American Roentgen Ray Scholarship in 2012, intended to support study that will enable the scholar to attain his or her professional career goal and prepare them for positions of leadership in academic radiology. She also maintains a very active role in radiology resident education and was selected for the 2009 ARRS Clinician Educator Development Program and the 2009 AUR Philips Faculty Development Program. She has given numerous award winning presentations and has peer-reviewed …publications to her credit. In 2008, she received an ARRS Summa Cum Laude Award for her scientific paper: Utility of CT Perfusion With Acetazolamide Challenge to Assess Cerebrovascular Reserve in Adult Moyamoya Patients. In 2011, she received an ASNR Cum Laude Award for her exhibit: Challenges of Post Therapy Brain Tumor Evaluation, and a 2011 RSNA Magna Cum Laude Award for her exhibit: Controversies in Acute Stroke Imaging: Is Multimodal Imaging Ready for Prime Time?

She spearheaded the clinical CT and MR perfusion program, which was instrumental in developing a robust clinical 3D image post-processing laboratory at the Radiology Department of University of Cincinnati. She is actively involved in multidisciplinary collaborations with the Comprehensive Stroke Center, the Brain Tumor Center and the Neurotrauma Center of the University of Cincinnati Neuroscience Institute. Dr. Vagal's academic areas of interests include MR perfusion in ischemic strokes, CT perfusion in chronic steno-occlusive disease and advanced neuroimaging of brain tumors.
