Dr. Adam Judd Katz, MD

Dr. Katz is an Associate Professor of Plastic Surgery and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Virginia. After graduating from Duke University in 1989 with a Bachelor's degree in Neuroscience, Dr. Katz obtained his M.D. from the University of Michigan Medical School, where he was president of the Alpha Omega Alpha National Honor Medical Society as well as a Hewlett-Packard Top Medical Graduate. His next 8 years were spent at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center for General and Plastic Surgery training. During this time, he spent 3 years as a research fellow, starting his work with ASCs and in August 1999 he was named the Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Initiative Researcher of the month. Upon joining the staff at UVA in 2001, Dr. Katz initiated the Laboratory of Applied Developmental Plasticity with a focus on the biology and therapeutic potential of adipose-derived cells and factors. He was awarded The Academic Scholar of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons from …2002-2004, he is a member of The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), The American Association of Plastic Surgeons (AAPS), and The Plastic Surgery Research Council, and serves on the Editorial Board of Annals of Plastic Surgery. Dr. Katz is an original founder of StemSource, Inc, a company based on his pioneering work with adipose stem cells, and which is now traded on the NASDAQ as Cytori Therapeutics (CYTX). He is also a co-founder, past president and board member of The International Federation for Adipose Therapeutics and Science (iFATS), a non-profit multidisciplinary society dedicated to facilitating the development of new technology derived from and directed toward adipose tissue. He is also a founder and board member of two additional biotechnology companies. He is married with two children.
