This post gives further validation that Black women's healthcare is not considered a priority -- especially after childbirth! I accompanied my daughter to a cardiology appointment today. It was made known to her cardiologist, Dr. Ardestani, that her blood pressure readings were still abnormal, three months after delivery. As a very concerned mother, I vehemently stressed to her that I have witnessed her becoming short of breath after moderate exercise, and even climbing stairs. Additionally, my daughter suffered severe complications late in her pregnancy -- all of which Dr. Ardestani was aware. For those very reasons, I expressed that I am not comfortable with her returning to work at the end of the month. I asked if she could remain under her care for an additional two weeks, as her mode of transportation would consist of riding public transportation (i.e., bus, subway, and walking over two miles to and from her office). The doctor refused to accommodate her, and stated "it would… be good for her to walk the distance... she can just go to work, and do her work." Her insensitive, unprofessional response neither addressed her or my concerns, nor did she act responsibly as a certified physician -- within an accredited hospital! I do not have a medical background, however, as a 37-year federal employee in the public diplomacy/public affairs field, what I heard and witnessed today was beyond unacceptable... beyond bad bedside manner. It is even more disturbing that this behavior was displayed by a physician! Dr. Ardestani clearly displayed a lack of concern for my daughter's well-being. Today's mistreatment, at the hands of Inova Fairfax, leads me to conclude that reports of racial disparities in maternal healthcare may be quite valid.
