Dr. Alan Hsaiofeng Chen, MD

I injured my finger in a wood working accident, Silver Cross recommended Dr. Chen so I made an appointment. I arrived at his offices, I was taken to a room where a nurse looked at my wound which was still open at that time with exposed bone. Then Dr. Chen came in, gave it a quick look and said "you will be fine but your days of being a hand model are over" which I didn't find funny but appreciated the effort. Then left the room, while walking out the door he said "we'll get this taken care of", I asked "what now?" and his assistant which was in the room during this interaction stuck her head back in and said "yes now" and walked away. The nurse sticks her head in 30 mins later and asked "Are you ready to do this" to which I reply "do what? I have no clue what the doctor is planning on doing!". She had a distressed look on her face as she said "the doctor didn't tell you what he was going to do?". I said "no" and she said "he will be right in to talk to you". A few minutes later… Dr. Chen comes in and starts explaining what he is planning on doing to fix my finger. While I appreciated the information, the way he delivered the information however was extremely condiscending. You would have thought I was a 6 year old that he was explaining it to. Then he goes to walk out, I stop him and ask him my second question, "how are you going to numb it, are you putting me under, giving me a nerve block?" As he's walking out the door, he stops, takes a deep breath as though asking two questions is unthinkable and said "nerve block" as if I'm suppose to know that information. Being that I have an issue with my wrist that could cause him a problem, I asked "in my elbow, wrist, finger?", now he's at the doorway and in the most condescending tone possible he said "finger". He then starts to walk away, I ask my final question "what does recovery look like" to which he replied "they will tell you about it after" as he walks out of the room. I'm then brought into the surgical room, there are three people in the room besides me, Dr. Chen, a nurse and someone else, his assistant or an intern I assume, he brings out a very large gauge needle. I'm not great with needles and so I say, "hey doc I'm not good with needles" and before I'm allowed to finish my statement which would have been "so please tell me where you are sticking me and how much will it hurt" but before I could say that he said "well don't cry, there are girls in the room" and jabs the needle in my finger. I have plenty of tattoos, needles don't bother me to that point but I wanted the information and the only thing I was feeling was anger toward this guy who is treating me like I'm a child. As the surgery is happening, he is talking to the women in the room and isn't talking to them like they are 6 years old so I know that's not his normal speech pattern. I didn't see him again, he didn't show up for one of my check up appointments and I think this is the reason he treats people the way he does, he never has to deal with a patient again. Something else did happen, when I came to get my stitches out, the women that did it was awesome but she didn't know how many stitches I had in my finger. Because of the scabs you couldn't see where the stitches were, he never wrote down how many stitches he gave me which meant she was just guessing if she got all the stitches out. I have since spoken to two other people who had very similar experiences with him. I understand a doctors need to emotionally separate from their patient but this is taking it way too far! The other problem is you are held medically hostage, once a surgery is performed, no other doctor will see you so as I tried to see a better doctor they refused to take on the liability of his work! Worst medical experience of my life!!!! I will say however that the nurses were very good at their job and kind, the front desk people were kinda rude but that would have never led to me leaving a negative review.

Dr. Chen is a among the rarest of doctors! He not only possess extraordinary surgical skills, but he is also compassionate and has excellent "bedside" manners!

My daughter was born with a defect that I thought would cripple her life. Dr. Chen was both informative and compassionate. More importantly, his surgery result was nothing short of a miracle. My daughter now has a chance of a normal life thanks to Dr. Chen.

Not sure which doctor the previous reviewer saw, but the Dr. Alan Chen (a plastic surgeon in Joliet, IL) I saw changed my life. I had a problem that was unique. Aftering seeing multiple doctors from pain specialists, neurologists to neurosurgeons, I did not have this problem resolved. Dr. Chen tackled this problem without hesitation and I am now healthy, happy and feel I owe him my life. We are very fortunate to have such wonderful doctor in our community. Thank you Dr. Chen!!

This Doctor is completely unprofessional. I will not go back for a follow up with him.
