Dr. Alan S Kaplan, MD

Current Responsibilities

Dr. Kaplan currently serves as vice president/chief medical officer for Iowa Health System. He has served in his current role since June 2009. Dr. Kaplan oversees corporate-wide clinical safety and quality improvement as well as physician alignment strategies, health care reform initiatives, physician workforce planning, home health, and a statewide patient call center. The Iowa Health System realizes $2B in annual net revenues and is comprised of 14 hospitals, a network of affiliated rural hospitals, and physician practices serving 71 communities throughout Iowa and western Illinois. Additionally, Dr. Kaplan serves as president of Iowa Health Physicians, a subsidiary corporation with $145M annual revenues, 1,300 employees, 270 physician and mid-level providers, and 63 clinics across Iowa and western Illinois.

Prior Experience

Prior to joining Iowa Health System, Dr. Kaplan worked at Edward Health Services Corporation (EHSC) in Naperville, Illinois, where he …served as VP/CMO & operations. Dr. Kaplan had responsibility for medical staff relations and direct responsibility for $200M net revenue including emergency services, three urgent care centers, corporate and employee health, laboratory, pharmacy, hospital-based physicians, information technologies, telecommunications, and materials management. Dr. Kaplan is residency trained and board certified in Emergency Medicine and has 14 years of practice experience.

Education, Awards and Professional Affiliations

Dr. Kaplan earned his master of medical management from Carnegie Mellon University in 2000. He graduated from Rush Medical College in 1985. Dr. Kaplan is a fellow of the American College of Physician Executives (ACPE) and the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE). He currently serves as an officer on the Board of Directors for ACPE.
