Dr. Alessandro Fichera, MD

Doctor Fichera was the epitomy of what a great doctor is. He listens, has great instincts and would recommend him all heartedly!

I had an excellent experience with Dr. Alessandro Fichera. From the moment I arrived, the staff was welcoming and professional. Dr. Fichera took the time to listen carefully to my concerns, explained everything in a clear and reassuring manner, and made me feel completely at ease throughout the visit. Their knowledge and compassionate approach were truly appreciated. I left the appointment feeling confident in the plan we discussed. Highly recommended!

Seeing Dr. Fichera, one feels like they are with a real Dr. that cares. Too often a patient can feel like nameless, faceless blank on the conveyor belt of medicine. 3 cheers for Dr. Fichera and staff.

Dr. Fichera performed a colon removal and j-pouch surgery on my son at the University of Chicago Hospital 14 years ago. At the time, I thought he was a very thoughtful, compassionate surgeon and knew what he was doing. My son did recover after all his surgeries and was feeling better, but Dr. Fichera gave him terrible advice after the surgery. He told him to live his life doing everything. There are athletes that have j-pouches. Well, my son did do everything and wound up injuring his j-pouch severely. When he went to see Dr. Fichera and told him what happened after examination, Dr. Fichera said he was fine. Didn't see anything wrong with his pouch. He let my son go on thinking this was all in his head. My son suffered so much and had to keep going to the University of Chicago and saw other doctors in Dr. Fichera's group, and they all said the same thing. The only doctor that would admit something was wrong in the group suggested my son go to Cleveland Clinic for a second… opinion. After my son went to the Cleveland Clinic, they did one test and knew his j-pouch was damaged. I lost all respect for Doctor Fichera after that. He knew something was wrong and let my son suffer because he didn't want to admit that he gave him bad advice. My son's heart rate was terribly high that he could have suffered a heart attack from this. It breaks my heart that I had trusted this man with my son's life and thought he was so compassionate, only to find out that he didn't care at all.

Dr. Fichera is easy to talk to and will give you straight forward answers. He operated on me in May and I am doing fine now.

Dr. Fichera was my husband's doctor. He was sick for 10 years and Dr. Fichera was by far the best doctor we saw during his illness. Kind, compassionate, caring, came to the hospital every day to check on his care. After surgery it was discovered that the tumor could not completely be removed. I don't know who was more upset - me or Dr. Fichera. He knew that my husband was now considered terminal and it weighed on him heavily. My husband was supposed to live another 2 years. Because of the skill of this surgeon he lived more than 7 years post surgery. I owe so much to this man. Because of him we were able to see my son graduate from college, get married and have 2 grandchildren. Excellent surgeon, wonderful man.

Dr. Fichera has a compassionate soul. He is so very kind.

I have a genetic colon cancer syndrome and needed to have my colon removed. I have never had surgery before and was nervous so I sought experts in the field and asked them who they would go to for this type of surgery. This led me to Dr. Fichera. All of my relatives who also have the mutation had open surgery and Dr. Fichera performed the surgery laproscopically. (I still can't believe he removed my colon from that small incision!) He is an amazing surgeon with a wonderful personality. (This was a bonus as I didn't care if the surgeon was a pompous a$$ as long as he was the best.) The scheduling was a pain - but that didn't have anything to do with him.

Arrogant enough to not need information from me regarding my experience with the disease. Unwilling to consider my request for additional biopsies, which could have told him that his type of surgery (flap) could not possibly remove all of the disease. Never saw him while I was in the hospital. Sent home next day with no referral for home nursing visits to monitor the wound healing. One of his residents was so concerned as to offer to make a house call. Four post surgery biopsies taken as far away from where he knew there still was disease, showed remaining disease in one. His comments were that “three out of four wasn’t bad”. As the remaining disease is in a “tough spot” he refers me to a doctor who does not treat this disease as opposed to a colleague of his who is considered the expert in this disease. Subsequent biopsies show disease where he left it as well as the “new spot” as well as a place where he had not even looked at. I don’t judge doctors by their personality, but rather… their judgment and sense of responsibility, and this doctor fails at both.
