Dr. Alexander Karmazin, MD

I am not the type of person to type reviews, but I feel compelled to write on about Dr. Karmazin. Dr. Karmazin should be embarrassed to call himself a Dr. My son and I had the absolute worst experience with him today, and I would strongly warn others to find a different Dr. That being said, let me give you some background. My son (6 years old) was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes while on vacation on California. The Dr.’s in California were very concerned and we all coordinated with our pediatrician in Utah to get him the care he needed when we returned home a few days later. The pediatric endocrinologist in Provo was Dr. Karmazin, so we were recommended to see him. We quickly found that Dr. Karmazin doesn’t take type 1 diabetes seriously and scheduled us to come see him several weeks later. We thought this was strange, and his office gave us some basic guidelines of insulin to give him until he could “squeeze” us in. We have carefully monitored our son, checked his blood sugar 5-10… times each day and administered his insulin. Finally, the morning of our appointment had arrived. We drove the 30 minute drive from our home to Provo. Right in front of the hospital (in fact all of 500 West in Provo is under construction. Most of the road is 1 lane. I give you this information because needless to say we sat in this construction mess for over 20 minutes. Not being from Provo, we had no idea this was happening, but like most roads in Utah you take it in stride when it happens. We arrived at our appointment at 8:13 (appointment was at 8:00). We then waited in line at the reception desk for an additional 5 minutes while the front desk staff (1 person, yet seating for many) helped an elderly couple. When our turn came up, I said I was here to check my son in and the young lady said I needed to wait while she called someone in the back. When she got a hold of someone in the back she said I would need to reschedule because I was late. I told her that wouldn’t be possible because my son was a newly diagnosed Type 1 diabetic and had waited weeks to see Dr. Karmazin and that we really needed to see him. She had me wait again while she walked in the back. She promptly came out and said that they would not see us because we were late. I tried to explain that we had been sitting in the construction in front of the hospital for 20 minutes and waited in line at their own office for our turn. She just didn’t care and said their policy is to not see anyone that is late. Frustrated, I walked away and went to get my son from the waiting room. Right then, Dr. Karmazin came out to the waiting room and came up to me and started lecturing me about being late and that his policy is to see no one that is late. I again tried to explain to him the reason we were late and that my son really needed to be seen because we have had little to no guidance on how to care for him since his Type 1 diabetes diagnoses. He said he didn’t care and that their policy was to not see anyone that is late. The time he spent chastising me in his waiting room could have been spent seeing my son, but Dr. Karmazin cares more about “policy” than the patient. I have learned that there are good doctors out there and bad doctors. Dr. Karmazin is not good. On the other hand, our pediatrician gives us his cell phone number and says to please call him with absolutely anything day or night and he will help us. Obviously this is something that we don’t take advantage of, but it is comforting to see how much he genuinely cares for our family. I’ve got kids that are seen for a variety of illnesses and he is absolutely amazing. The type of Dr. everyone should be. I absolutely understand that being on time for appointments is important for an office to run efficiently. If a patient is chronically late and expects to be seen over and over that is one thing, but for a first-time patient diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes Dr. Karmazin should be bending over backwards to make sure he is stable and taken care of. I would venture to say most people with an appointment in that office will be late today because of the construction mess outside of the hospital. I guess the good news is Dr. Karmazin won’t have to see any patients today! Maybe he could take up golf with all of his spare time. My son has been seeing Dr. Karmazin for 5 years. He's very knowledgeable and friendly and my sonbhas been doijg great under his care. We typically see him every 4 months. Recently, I called in with a question and he booked us an appointment for the next day just to go over things with me. He ran an extra test just to reassure us and then called as soon as the tests came back to follow up.

Couldn't have picked a better pediatric endocrinologist.

We were reassured that our daughter's medical condition is a variant of normal. Dr. Karmazin explained things in a manner that was very easy to understand.

Lets just say I will never take my child to him again. I wont go into what happened to us, but lets just say I came to find out his fellow Endo doctors, nurses and staff have very little respect for him and he care very little about his patients. Only about covering his own butt.
