Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Does donating a kidney shorten your lifespan?

Donors actually tend to live a longer life because they are generally healthier individuals. They undergo a comprehensive medical evaluation before the decision to donate is made and they tend to take better care of themselves post-donation and hence have a long lifespan.

2. Do you have to be young to donate a kidney?

People into their 70s can donate a kidney—it is all about the health of the potential living donor.

3. Does a kidney donor have to take medications for the rest of their life?

A kidney donor will be given prescriptions for pain medication and stool softeners at discharge from the hospital. These are only for the immediate post-operative period; after that time, a donor does not have to take medication. A kidney donor will never have to take anti-rejection medications the way the kidney recipient will.

4. Can a kidney donor still consume alcohol following donation?

While excessive alcohol use is always dangerous, a kidney donor can consume alcohol in moderation.

Ensuring Data Transparency and Trust: A Guide to Vitals Doctor Listings and Reviews

Our provider data is gathered directly from physicians and publicly available databases. Providers who verify their profiles gain the ability to update information, offering additional details about their specialties, education, treated conditions, performed procedures, and accepted insurances.

Reviews on Vitals are submitted by users only. Recognizing the valuable insights these reviews offer into a doctor's reputation, we maintain internal policies and protocols to ensure the quality and accuracy of all reviews. Importantly, providers cannot delete or alter reviews independently. Reviews can only be deleted or changed following an internal assessment by our customer service team.

Your feedback is highly valued and we encourage you to contact our support team should you encounter any issues.
