Dr. Alfonso J Barbati, DO

Dr. Barbati is an outstanding gastroenterologist. He treats his patients with respect and care. He has done several of my colonoscopies and I would never go to anyone else. Folks I have referred to him have been very happy with him and have thanked me for the referral.

Many friends had complications following a colonscopy, but I've always had the best experience-even when tricky polyps had to be removed.

After spending several years with several gastrointestinal doctors including a group in Pittsburgh this doctor may of saved my life after the first visit finding a problem that had been overlooked for years that required surgery. I had a colonoscopy from him and prior to it my symptoms were a large amount of blood discharge, a piece of tissue about 4" long was in the toilet and some other bloody mucous in the toilet. He did not want to see the picture of the tissue discharge that I had. I already had been diagnosed with internal hemorrhoids years prior and after the procedure I had extreme pain at the top of my colon slightly below my rib cage. I have chronic pain and I am on a large amount of medication which that day I only had my morning dosage and it was now 5pm. I was asking for pain control and he refused to help. He wanted to send me via ambulance to the hospital for a CT scan but I was to remain in horrible pain in the process. I had my medication in my purse but was told I was not allowed to take it. I have been under a pain clinics care for 11 years and you can't just stop pain medication like that and he should know that since he is a doctor. He told me the pain medication would interfere with the CT… scan, which I can't see how it could since a CT is just a more detailed x-ray. I have had over 100 operations, so I am very familiar with a lot of tests that are performed. He also told me that I was completely clear and everything was benign (what was benign, my entire colon?). However, he took samples to send off to the lab. I know he has been doing this a long time, but to tell a patient they are all clear before lab results are back I do not think is right, especially when they are in pain after the procedure and had no pain prior to the procedure. I have no clue where the tissue came from, was it part of my colon? Where was I bleeding inside to cause so much blood when I went to the bathroom? What was the condition of my internal hemorrhoids? He told me I was clear, did they just go away? The only thing he told me was that I had an infection in my colon. I went home with the same questions in my head that I had before I went in. I have seen hundreds of doctors since I was 15 years old and I was not impressed with his explanation of my condition. I felt it was very vague and I repeated the questions multiple times and got the same answer from him, I had an infection and that was the cause of everything. I have seen so many doctors in my lifetime (I am 48 years old), I have received many diagnosis and feel I am a pretty good judge of character. I was not impressed with his explanation of my condition in comparison to many other doctors I have seen. He did not explain the causes of the discharges I was having so I still have many unanswered questions in my head. This is the reason I would not go back to see this doctor, and I am now seeking a second opinion.
