Dr. Allan Hiroshi Andrews, MD

Zero starts. I had to re-enter this review because it was scrubbed from the internet. I do NOT like to give bad reviews, but I feel obligated to warn others of this doctor and practice. Dr. Andrews placed me on a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), despite the fact that he knew I had Raynaud’s syndrome (possible precursor to autoimmune disease) and that I had been unable to tolerate a previous PPI that I was prescribed by another doctor. I had a violent reaction to the previous one. As a gastroenterologist, he should certainly be aware of the clinical trials that have proven PPI’s cause a quadrupled increased risk of triggering autoimmune disease. Because he didn’t believe me and refused to listen to me when I explained how intolerant I was to the previous PPI, he insisted on my staying on the new PPI by using scare tactics (telling me I would die if I didn’t do as he said). I had the same reaction as I did to the previous PPI but stayed on it due to his insistence, and as a result, was… disabled with a severe autoimmune disorder. Now I have severe whole body inflexibility, severe joint pain, muscle weakness, dysphagia with food constantly getting stuck in my esophagus, malabsorption with severe weight loss, severe GERD and digestive issues, devastating fatigue, and lung issues, among other things. I lost all quality of life. As if this weren’t enough, this in-network practice never obtained prior authorization for the anesthesia for a procedure that Dr. Andrews insisted that I have. Since they didn’t obtain the prior authorization, the insurance company asked the practice for more information; however, the practice chose not to respond to them but instead to bill me for the entire amount of the procedure. I had only agreed to the procedure because the insurance company said it was covered 100%. Per the practice's contract with the insurance company, the onus was on the practice for obtaining the prior authorization. The practice also did not provide me with a good faith estimate for the charges the day before the procedure as required per the “No Surprises Act” law. I worked with them and the insurance company very kindly and respectfully for seven months to try to get the practice to submit retroactive authorization, but they refused and instead sent a debt collections agency after me without warning right after telling me they would submit the retroactive authorization and asking me to give them another 30 days to resolve the matter. They left me with no choice but to report them to the NC Dept of Justice, the NC Medical Board, the Federal Trade Commission, and the Dept. of Managed Healthcare. It was only because of the Dept of Justice that they finally relented and corrected the bill.

I would have to say that Dr Allan Hiroshi has the worst medical experience I’ve encountered in a lifetime. Spent 7 months insisting that my mother was suffering from IBS, when she was in fact dealing with ovarian cancer. It was only after I was reading about how her symptoms could be linked to ovarian cancer that I asked him whether he had prescribed a catscan. He had not thought of it, despite her being a breast cancer survivor and a carrier of the BRCA mutant gene, both of which made her at risk of coming down with ovarian cancer. By the time the results from the catscan came in, she was diagnosed with stage 3C ovarian cancer. She was immediately admitted to the hospital in Wilmington NC, and since then, has had numerous surgeries, chemotherapy cycles of treatment and radiation. And in all this time, never did Dr Hiroshi bother to follow up and check in on her, let alone apologize for his mistaking IBS for ovarian cancer. Making mistakes and not catching ovarian cancer in it’s early… stages, is common, but the fact that my mother was a breast cancer survivor and a carrier of BRCA, should have made ovarian cancer a distinct possibility, which needed to verified. All that was needed to catch the cancer at an earlier and more manageable stage was to prescribe a catscan 1/2 year earlier, when she came to him complaining of symptoms, which are classic ovarian cancer indicators. At the very least, checking in on her, following up with her would have been a decent human touch… we are still waiting… and that dates from August 2017.

We have seen several gastroenterologist I have two daughters one with ulcer colitis and one with Crohn’s and Dr. Andrews is by far the best in town

Dr. Andrews is wonderful, I am an esophageal cancer survivor and he has helped immensely in helping me deal and live with my inconveniences while also suggesting simple helpful suggestions Highly recommend

I don't understand the negative reviews. He has great rapport with the patient & tells you what's best, according to his medical expertise. I didn't want to have a colonoscopy, but I will never forget his wise words... that in this day & age of medical technology that no one should have a fatality due to CC. I am 68, healthy, never, ever had a colonoscopy. I took a home test that reflected positive & scheduled the colonoscopy. Had it today, Aug. 29 & the results were normal. Yes, the prep for this test is annoying, but I went through with it. Afterward, he said he never thought I'd go through with it & neither did I. I recommend this doctor--highly. Dr not sensitive to problems

Very rude, poor bedside manner. Any GI related problems are due to "constipation" in his opinion. If you have heartburn/reflux you're told to lose weight. Puts things in medical record that were never discussed during visit. If I could give less than one star overall I would.
