Dr. Alvin Roy Cabrera, MD

I grew up in a small town in New Jersey, after which I left for Massachusetts to study at Harvard College. Upon graduating, I spent a year in the Philippines on a Fulbright Scholarship, leading an ethnographic project on Filipinos living with HIV. I went to medical school at University of California, San Francisco, where I conducted thesis research on prostate cancer. I started radiology residency at Stanford University in California but missed direct patient care, so I switched to radiation oncology residency at Duke University in North Carolina. Duke recruited me after residency to its faculty, in which capacity I treated a variety of cancers but specialized in brain, spine, and genitourinary tumors with a focus on highly precise, conformal techniques. While I enjoy research and teaching, patient care motivates me more, so I transitioned to community practice. My wife, who grew up in Washington, works as a pediatric ophthalmologist. We have a daughter, whose grandparents stay with …us much of the year.
