Amaka Iheaka is a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner who provides compassionate, individualized mental health care to children, adolescents, adults, and veterans.

Amaka believes that meaningful change begins with understanding where a person is right now. Before deciding what treatment should look like, she takes time to listen, understand what the patient is experiencing, and explore their awareness of the concerns affecting their life. Rather than ignoring or avoiding difficult issues, she helps patients recognize and understand them in a supportive and nonjudgmental way.

She also understands that everyone has a different level of readiness for change. Her approach is not to force change, but to meet patients where they are and work together to identify realistic next steps. Treatment is developed collaboratively and tailored to each person’s symptoms, experiences, culture, values, needs, and goals.

Active listening is an important part of her practice, and she strives to create a culturally sensitive, safe, welcoming, and nonjudgmental space where patients can speak openly without feeling rushed, dismissed, or judged.

Her approach is collaborative and trauma-informed, with an emphasis on treating the whole person rather than simply treating a diagnosis. She works with each patient to develop an individualized treatment plan that may include psychiatric evaluation, medication management, supportive psychotherapy, coping strategies, education, and other treatment recommendations.

When medication is appropriate, Amaka discusses available options, expected benefits, potential side effects, and patient concerns so that treatment decisions can be made together. Follow-up care focuses not only on symptoms, but also on how treatment is affecting the person’s daily life and whether the treatment plan continues to meet their needs.
