Dr. Amanda M Starling, MD

I’m not even sure where to begin. I was seeing Dr. M. Starling for postpartum depression, and initially, everything seemed fine. I work for the city, and my schedule changes every six months. About a month before my schedule changed from day shift to night shift, I already had three appointments scheduled. As soon as I became aware of my upcoming schedule change, I called—six weeks in advance—to reschedule all of my appointments, as they were important for my health. However, I was told that I would be charged because it was being considered a “cancellation” rather than a reschedule. This made no sense, as I was proactively trying to move my appointments due to a work schedule change that was completely out of my control. I explained that I would be working nights and sleeping during the day, making it impossible to attend the original appointment times. I also attempted to reschedule for my days off, but was still told it would count as cancellations. At that point, it felt less… like a policy and more like a cash grab. Fast forward, I received a bill for $300—$100 per appointment. When I attempted to dispute the charges, I was told that I was marked as a “no-show,” which is completely inaccurate. Not only did I call well in advance, but I also made multiple efforts to reschedule. It is extremely disappointing that a medical professional—someone who has taken an oath to care for patients—would misrepresent the situation in order to collect fees. This is both unacceptable and unethical. Fortunately, I keep thorough records, including the dates and times of my calls, and I will be pursuing this dispute further.
