Dr. Ammar Sami Traboulsi, MD

I have been under the care of Dr.T for approximately 7 months now, and our scheduled 15-minute video call appointments always feel rushed. Throughout the sessions, I have noticed that he rarely listens to my concerns and instead focuses on his computer screen, which makes me feel quite uncomfortable, especially considering my anxiety. He tends to ask questions without looking at me directly, and he never inquires about my personal life or how the medication is affecting me. Recently, I discovered that I was pregnant, and when I informed him, he advised me to abruptly stop taking my bipolar disorder medication, claiming that there would be no withdrawal symptoms since it's “not that type of drug”. However, upon researching the medication, I found that there are indeed potential withdrawal symptoms. Seeking a second opinion, I consulted a psychiatric nurse practitioner who strongly advised against quitting the medication abruptly during pregnancy and instead recommended a gradual… tapering off process. Unfortunately, when I completely stopped taking the drug, I experienced intense suicidal thoughts. Based on my experience, I would not recommend Dr.T, as he failed to inform me about the possible side effects of taking my medication while pregnant.

I've taken my son to many Dr.s since he was 5. From these Dr.s he was given ADD medicine (WRONG). I've paid 5,000 out of my own pocket at Yale for an Asperger's test... Which I was told nope he doesn't have it... And that's all!!? No other diagnosis. 5,000!!! Several Drs have seen him and given meds that were all wrong, 5 minute appointments, not communicating with the school or anything... Professional pill pushers they are!!!. He's been to a school out of our community where the Dr. there was giving him medication that made him hear voices!! After aging out of that school I brought him to Dr. T and told him our story... He weaned my son off of the med he felt was causing the problems, the voices quieted and went away. He now takes meds for a mood disorder.... Because there's no medication for the AUTISM that he also has! My son is now in College and I am quite proud and happy to say that I'm looking forward to his future! I have been on the same medications for years, and expected to go to this doctor for medication management. I have experienced my share of doctors, and I Immediately could tell he was one that was not going to listen to anything I said or consider anything that I brought up. He was pretty rude, and did not seem to understand certain areas of what I had come to receive med management for, which was alarming. He also said I needed to spend more time on my medications-the same ones I had been on for 3 years.. He also gave me forms for labwork that were easier for him to fill out, but took hours to process when I went there-I have never had that type of unprofessional experience for a simple form. There was absolutely no conversation about what I wanted as the patient-I have never left any doctor so upset and frustrated.

Dr. Traboulsi was my psych doctor for about eight years, from my freshman year of high school and onward. The waiting was always long-winded, and every time I saw him he'd barely look at me. We tried a battery of different medications to help me get through - including things that had dreadful side effects, all of which he would minimize and disregard. He doesn't like his patience to be competent or have participation in their own treatment. One time, I had a reaction to a medication. My muscles were spasming terribly, and a warning label for this medication (and in commercials for it!) threatened that it could be permanent or deadly if it continued. When these appeared, I discontinued my usage immediately and refused to consider it again. Dr. Traboulsi became adamant that he could give me another medication on top of this one, to fix that side effect. On another occasion, I was told that I would no longer need my ADD medication because I wasn't going to be in school anymore,… and he didn't feel it was necessary. While I understand the concerns about Ritalin and Adderall, I was on a non-stimulant, Strattera - a different type of ADD medication that has no abuse market. For a reason. It's only today that I've realized how harmful that opinion has been to my life. For 11 years now, I've been struggling with ADD and fighting my own mind all day long in order to accomplish the most basic of tasks. And I've had it in my head that, this entire time, I wasn't worthy of the medication because I wasn't in some sort of academic pursuit. His bias and flippancy and disregard has cost me undocumented amounts of personal progress I could've gained. I've had struggles in work, in interpersonal relationships, in managing my home. All of these come back to the fact that I can never follow through with a task due to ADD symptoms. I start something and then, like a whirlwind, something else whisks me away. Don't sign yourself or your child up to go to someone who'll just dismiss your concerns like this.

Horrible, horrible, horrible. Run don't walk away from this Dr.

If you’ve been paying attention to any local news outlet for the last five years, you know that prescription drugs, their side effects, and the dependencies they cause are anything but a laughing matter. Some cause debilitating side effects, while others, such as opioids, have the potential to cause overdose and death. Regardless of the drug in question, current medical recommendations clearly state that patients should openly discuss side effects and possible drug interactions with their clinicians as well as their pharmacists. This is what I had in mind earlier this week when I walked into an appointment with psychiatrist Dr. Ammar Traboulsi, of Connecticut Behavioral Health. For some time, I have experienced physical pain symptoms initiated by taking a strong antibiotic. I was advised by my specialist to consider neuromodulators (psychiatric drugs) to help manage the pain. Understandably, I felt it prudent to have a frank conversation with my doctor about the possible side effects… of taking any new medicine, and had confidence that Dr. Traboulsi could provide the professional expertise necessary. I couldn’t have been more wrong. My experience is as follows: While waiting for 35 minutes to see the doctor, I met another patient who confessed she was having trouble reading the intake form. I helped her painstakingly interpreting the questions before she disappeared into Dr. Traboulsi’s office before me. As I waited my turn I mentally reviewed the questions I had for the doctor, making notes as to not forget. Upon entering Dr. Traboulsi’s office I felt an immediate sense of antagonism. It quickly became clear that the doctor had no idea who I was, despite having seen me one week prior. He could not, or did not bother to recall whether or not he had already prescribed me a medication, and had no recollection of my symptoms of pain. We began to discuss treatment options, and I made reasonable inquiries about the side effects of a particular drug. He told me that all the drugs have a long list of side effects and suggested I “google it” while simultaneously typing on his computer, refusing to make eye contact with me. I tried again, this time from another angle. What were the were the withdrawal symptoms of the drug, and did he even help patients discontinue their prescriptions after a time? At this he became irritated with me, indicating this drug only has discontinuation effects and that if you want to stop a drug, you just stop. At this point I bid Dr. Traboulsi goodbye as civilly as I possibly could. The entire experience lasted only 6 or 7 minutes, and and my insurance will likely pay Dr. Traboulsi handsomely for the privilege of expressing his contempt and impatience with me. This experience leads me to wonder, what are the appropriate expectations of the clinician-patient relationship? Is it too much to ask that a doctor have the courtesy to know your case before your appointment, look you in the eye, and answer your valid questions with respect and professionalism? Or, should patients be expected to accept the vague and hasty recommendations of doctors who are clearly unconcerned with their individual health needs? I write this letter not for myself, but for the probable hundreds of patients who do not have the resources to advocate for their own health. I think back to my friend from the waiting room and dismay to think what she would have done if Dr. Traboulsi told her to “google” the side effects of her prescription. In this troubling political and social climate where women, minorities, those with health conditions, and the socioeconomically underprivileged are more marginalized than ever it is our responsibility to advocate for transparency and respect within the medical system. To first do no harm is to acknowledge that power without compassion is abuse. I hope Dr. Traboulsi will remember this next time.

My daughter saw him when she was in 2nd grade and she had a some hearing loss and when we saw him she went into the corner of his office and played with the toys and he never tried to interact with her and he never turned to acknowledge her or anything. He spoke softly to her and I told him that he will need to speak louder because she does have a some hearing loss and we were waiting for her tubal surgery.. after telling him this he still continued to speak low to her and never made eye contact with her. He just irritated me to the point that I nearly in the middle of the session got up and left. We went once and never went back. He really sucks!
