Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my pregnancy considered high-risk and what does this specific diagnosis mean?

'High-risk' is a term we use when a pregnancy needs a more specialized level of care to ensure the health of both mom and baby. Our team has decades of combined experience managing everything from the most common diagnoses to the most complex genetic anomalies. My job is to be your advocate, clarify what this diagnosis means for you, and create a clear, safe path forward.

What can I expect at my first visit?

Your first visit with me is a comprehensive consultation designed to give me a complete picture of your health and your pregnancy. My main goal is to work with you and your primary OB/GYN to create the best possible care plan.

The visit is typically longer than a routine prenatal appointment, often lasting between 1 to 2 hours, so please plan for that. It generally involves three main parts:

In-Depth Conversation: you'll sit down with me and my nursing team. This is my time to listen and learn. We will have a detailed conversation about your medical, surgical, obstetrical, gynecological, social, genetic and family history.

Your Current Pregnancy: We'll discuss how things have been going so far and the specific reason your doctor referred you to me.

The Detailed Ultrasound: A key part of the visit is usually a high-resolution ultrasound. This is often more detailed and extensive than the ultrasounds you've had before. Our highly skilled sonographers will perform the scan, and I will review the images. I will explain what we are seeing on the screen as we go, and you will have a chance to see your baby.

The Plan and Recommendations: I will explain my findings in a way that is easy to understand and make a Personalized Care Plan where I will outline my recommendations. This could include things like more frequent monitoring, additional testing, medication adjustments, or specific lifestyle advice.

A Collaborative Approach: We will discuss how we will work with your primary OB/GYN. We see ourselves as consultants and part of your team, we don’t replace your main doctor. We will send them a detailed report of our findings and recommendations.

Next Steps: We will make sure you know exactly what happens next, whether it’s scheduling a follow-up visit with us or simply following up with your OB/GYN.

In short, our goal is for you to leave your first visit feeling informed, supported, and confident that you have a dedicated team of experts looking out for both you and your baby.

Your Questions and Concerns: This is your time. We encourage you to ask anything on your mind. No question is too small. It’s helpful to write your questions down beforehand so you don’t forget.

I have a birth plan that's very important to me. How do you approach collaborating with patients to balance their personal wishes with the medical necessities of a high-risk delivery?

I believe your birth plan is an essential communication tool. My approach is to use it as our starting point. We will go through your preferences together, and I’ll be very transparent about what parts are safely achievable, what might need to be flexible, and what aspects we may have to modify. The goal is to create a new, shared plan that honors your wishes as much as possible while building in the safeguards needed for a healthy delivery.
