Let’s face it, New Mexicans, there are very few things to draw doctors to our state due to how poor it is and how poorly managed it is. Bad schools, high violence, less salary, etc. So why would a doctor come here? In my mind, it’s likely because they can’t compete in more attractive markets. This means we get stuck with the chaff. Another way to say this is that the vast majority of doctors in New Mexico are both useless and worthless. If you are unfortunate enough to have no choice but to use Vigo, here are things I’ve learned: 1) He listens to see if he can take offense with the way things are said first. If he finds he can take offense – the bar seems very low – then he becomes passive/aggressive and that will play out in different ways. Be very careful how you challenge him or even mildly disagree because if he takes offense, it seems he will also take revenge. In my case, the prior authorization he was supposedly working on never happened. If you need to communicate… electronically, be absolutely certain there will be no way for him to offense. 2) He is very intelligent and like many very intelligent people, he suffers from smart guy disease, specifically, he suffers from both confirmation bias and egocentric bias. Because of this he waits to talk, instead of listening and will ignore anything that doesn’t fit what he thought he heard while waiting to talk. See #1 if you must correct him for anything. 3) He is not into maintenance at all and apparently sees no value in prevention like ordering regular labs. I guess that might be because he’s so smart he doesn’t need to see what is happening in the body? I was his patient for a year and even with requesting labs, I never got them. Chances are he was deeply offended by the request and just ignored it without letting me know. The above is true for a lot of doctors – and a lot of people in general – to greater or lesser extent. In my experience, Vigo is on the extreme end. Your best choice is to find another doctor because in comparing him to other doctors even in the wasteland of New Mexico medical care, he comes up very short. Before going with this guy ask yourself; can I survive with urgent care or the ER until I can get in with someone else?
