We had to visit an after-hours Pediatric Urgent Care because my six month old started projectile vomiting along with gasping/wheezing shortly after ingesting over the counter soy formula. It was her difficulty breathing that terrified my husband and I. (If she were having an anaphylactic reaction- minutes count, so we rushed out!) The drive to the UTMB clinic was a scary one. Upon arriving, my daughter vomited greenish bile onto my shoulder and immediately started to recover. The entire staff was courteous and kind, but Jimerson seemed very condescending. She made comments that she suspected that we overfed our daughter and that her eating habits may have led to her episode. (We would never overfeed/forcefeed our six month old)...she also made a comment that my husband and I strike her as the kind of parents who overly worry. Are you kidding me? Should we have neglected potentially catrastophic symptoms because we don't want to come off as "worry-worts"? When questioned about which… formula I normally have her on (not the soy) I told her the brand and she looked at me puzzled stating that she'd never heard of it. When she stepped back into the hallway she could be heard comically discussing my choice of formula with the other staff and laughing. That, to me, was very unprofessional. I've done hours upon hours of research on baby formulas out there! When I started to ween my daughter from breast milk (because I under produced) I tried the popular Infamil, and Similac brands. My daughter, as a result, suffered from painful gas, and colic. It was then that I switched her to the Holle (Swiss/German) all organic formula. It has zero fillers and zero sucralose. It has been amazing for my baby and she has been thriving since the switch. Holle is sold by higher end retailers, and even by 'Float Baby' (here in Houston). I don't understand why I was the topic of her jokes with the matter of my daughter's formula. She also told me that my daughter being so overweight puts her at risk for anemia according to her growth/weight chart and that we should not feed our daughter AT ALL during the night. Her words: "She should be weened by now." (I get that weening has its differences of opinion in the medical community but again it was the condescension she used. I did not go to be lectured or patronized by someone who is not our regular pediatrician. I went to an after hours Urgent Care to make sure my daughter wasn't going into anaphylactic shock.) Our ACTUAL Pediatrician (this morning on our follow up) negated all the comments she made. He told us our twenty pound daughter is perfectly healthy and we are feeding her according to her six-month schedule. She is simply a bigger, chunkier, beautifully healthy baby. Before we left Dr. Jimerson swabbed my daughter for RSV and sent us on our way with a prescription for Hydroxyzine "just in case, but it didn't look like an allergic reaction" in her eyes. Within ten minutes of our being home my daughter broke out in mouth blisters and hives! I recorded it and photographed it because I couldn't believe it! Turns out my daughter is indeed allergic/intolerant to the protein found in soy. I truly hope Dr. Jimerson improves her bedside manner. I understand that she may not have had all the answers for an allergy diagnosis immediately- but she could've shown a little empathy and have been less condescending with us (the parents that love their daugher with everything they have.)
