Dr. Anthony Guy Leung, MD

Poor bedside manner? Incompetence? Botched surgeries? If you are looking for any of the above then this is your guy. Dr. Leung is a disgrace to the medical profession. I had the unfortunate experience of undergoing ACL reconstruction with this "surgeon" and should've notice the red flags from day 1. I initially completed a consultation in which I was told "your ACL is not torn" following a bedside lachman test. After questioning his assessment, Leung stated "what makes you think your ACL is torn?" Little did he know I had a copy of my MRI with me. Long story short, I did not have any other options thanks to my insurance at the time and was forced to proceed with surgery with him. Recovery was one of the worst experiences of my life riddled with complications (excessive swelling, pain, muscle atrophy, difficulty communicating with his office). Needless to say, the graft eventually failed and I had to have another ACL reconstruction. After review of my MRI's, my new surgeon noted Leung… had placed his ACL graft tunnels incorrectly (approximately 6 mm from optimal spot) which led to continued instability and additional injuries (meniscus, femur + tibia compression fracture). If you are faced with having to deal with this guy, I strongly urge you to contact your insurance and complain to member services. Do what you need to do to avoid dealing with this insurance henchman.

Never looked at X-ray and said don’t believe everything you read. Spent less than 5 minutes after I was originally diagnosed with a fracture.

I first saw Dr. Leung on 6/1/17, when he saw me for 5 minutes, reviewed xrays, and told me they were getting auth for an MRI of my neck. No biggie, he couldn't help if he couldn't see the problem, I get it. I called the office on 6/6 AM because I hadn't heard anything from them. The girl floundered a bit on the phone, but said someone was to call me back that day. I called back 6/7 PM after not hearing anything, and got my auth 6/8. I saw Dr. Leung again 6/30 with my MRI results. He explained what he saw for all of 60 seconds then wanted to refer me to a neuro surgeon. I was taken aback a bit, not understanding why that was, so I started asking questions. He seriously stared back at me with a slightly irritated look on his face, staring me down, like now I was keeping him from his lunch. I rephrased my question, thinking he didn't understand what I meant (I'm no medical terminology guru) so I got a little bit of snidely-toned explanation as to what he saw and why he was… referring me out. So here I sit, a FULL FOUR WEEKS LATER, with no calls, no auth, no follow up, no NOTHING. I knew when I walked out of that office that I would never see him again, but I at LEAST expected to get the flippin' authorization to see another doctor I hoped could help. Since then, I've had another professional look at my MRI, and he found the problem. Leung went to the most prominent issue and looked no further, despite my questions. But the prominent issue wasn't the one causing my pain. I wouldn't send my worst enemy to see them if they needed an ortho. And I am not one to write scathing reviews unless very warranted.

This doctor is totally incompetent, condescending and rude. I went to him years ago for a knee injury. He has an accent and I had trouble understanding him, but when I went to ask a question he held up his hand in the STOP position, and stated "no questions until I'm finished." Mmmmkaayyyyy...but when he pointed to the films he had up on the screen to show where the injury was, it sure didn't look like a knee. So i pulled up my trackpant leg and said "please show me what part of my knee you are referring to on my film" and he looked startled and said, "you are not Jane Doe (fill in a name)?" I said NO, and gave my name. HE HAD THE WRONG IMAGES AND CHART. So much for me not being allowed to ask questions. The whole experience was so negative and downright scary, I never ended up going back or getting anything done about my knee. Fast forward about 10 years later, I decide I'm going to get it fixed. HMO sends me to some other rude Dr, who is going over my new films, and when I ask a… question, I get "NO QUESTIONS UNTIL I'M DONE." So I say "hey aren't you the same Dr I saw about 10 years ago?" He flips through my chart, and answers in the affirmative. I didn't recognize his name or face after all that time, but the rudeness was unmistakable. GO TO TIJUANA FOR SURGERY BEFORE YOU LET THIS MAN TOUCH YOU.

I was given a referral to see Dr. Leung. Naturally I looked him up and was horrified by all the negative reviews! I even called my insurance company to see if there was another specialist I could go to and was told I would have to switch my primary care physician and go through that whole process if I wanted to see someone else. I decided to keep my appointment because I was actually intrigued by this guy. Why so many bad reviews? Upon meeting Dr. Leung he introduced himself to me and shook my hand. Sat down, asked me several questions, did some tests on my range of motion and answered all my questions. He recommended an MRI and upon follow up was very detailed in explaining what was wrong. He even told me he'd request another MRI in the near future to see if things had gotten worse. He was honest, direct and to the point. I think part of the problem most people have is he's a little bit shy. He doesn't look you in the eye the whole time he's talking to you but he does very well at… explaining everything. I noticed his profile states he speaks several languages. Then it hit me. This guy is brilliant! And sometimes along with these intelligent types comes this type personality. True, he isn't all warm and fuzzy but he's a surgeon, not a GP. I even found out later he had performed surgery on someone I know and he did an excellent job. I didn't have a problem with the office staff either (they're just super busy!) and I was actually shocked that I received my referral for my MRI in ONE week and got my appointment right away. I would have no problem going back to Dr. Leung for any future problems.

Dr. Leung thoroughly discussed my condition in terms that I understood. He then discussed what he would do during surgery, what I could do prior to surgery to make recovery and rehab easier, and what to expect after surgery.

I had an excellent experience with Dr. Anthony Leung but I wasn't looking for someone to coddle me and I took responsibility for making sure all my ducks were in a row for appointments and while waiting for insurance responses for referrals I made phone calls to confirm and speed up the process. Its extra work but well worth it. I found Dr. Leung very specific and direct. I told him my problem and he gave me options. He also requested a 2nd opinion from another Dr. which extended the process but was the right thing to do. With information in hand he gave me the options and I chose surgery. I searched everywhere to find reviews for him as a surgeon but everyone is hung up on the office staff and his personality. I don't care about either. I just wanted to know how his surgery skills are. So I hope my experience will help those who are looking for that answer. I had excellent care. After agreeing to surgery the staff and I together took control of organizing my pre op appointments and… post operative appointments. I was given all the paperwork needed and took notes to make sure I had the appointments in my calendar. Everything was like clock work. I searched on my own to learn about the operation itself so I would know what specific questions to ask when I saw Dr. Leung for the pre op. At that appointment it again was him going over the surgery with me and what to expect. Simply, to the point. On surgery day Long Beach Memorial took excellent care of getting me ready. They were AWESOME!! I didn't see Dr. Leung before nor after the surgery. He spoke with my husband and explained the surgery and how well it went and answered his questions. There was no need for me to see him except I would have like to say THANK YOU!!! I am on day 3 of recovery from a labral tear in my hip and I feel INCREDIBLE!! I am already walking and the pain in the hip is gone. I will see Dr. Leung in a couple days to take out stitches and the next day I begin physical therapy. If anything changes I'll let you know but I am very happy happy happy.

The staff and Dr Leong were sooo nice.

Dr Leung is an excellent physician, very detailed. Reviewed my MRI with me, went over my diagnosis and recommendations. I would recommended this physician to my family and friends.

Even if it seems ridiculous, I left Dr. Leung's office crying!! It was so frustrating ,after 6 days of terrible pain and swollen knee I was referred to this Doctor , a piece of rock or Ice was more sensitive than him. He just showed me the x-ray and gave me his diagnostic in one word, and your options are A, B or C, you choose , he kept repeating....like it was a restaurant menu. No additional explanation , no communications skills at all, I felt that I was in front of a robot!! No concern about the patient!! It was a nightmare , my first and my last visit to this Doctor!!
