Dr. Antoinette Valenti Shappell, MD

Based on my experiences, Dr.Valenti should not be tasked with helping anyone else overcome poor mental health. After terrible MVA my panic and anxiety issues have been out of control yet have not seen her "in person" in almost a year. I am a USMC vet & was referred to her through VA. Maybe she is better at handling civilians. When I do see her in person she has shown little empathy for my situation. I was seeing a mental health specialist through "community care" but the referral expired. Dr.Valenti said she put a new one in but I have heard nothing. My only current care is when she calls me every few months and that's if she hasn't canceled her appointment multiple times Dr.Valenti has been wildly unprofessional since I've been under her care. Even during our first session after my MVA - Dr.Valenti, of her own volition & completely unprovoked, shared her personal opinions of political topics such as use of medical Marijuana & her thoughts on divorce. I have been so overwhelmed by… my injuries that the thought of overhauling my doctors was not something I could stomach but it is beyond that now. During the few times I have been able to see her in person she was more likely to voluntarily (vaguely) gossip about other patients then show me empathy for my situation. Example, She told me she "wasn't a fan of telemental health" because she "has patients that would be doing odd things doing their appointments like go to the grocery store" All I am asking of Dr.Valenti is for her professional medical opinion and that she state on record that if she believes me to be of strong enough mental health that she thinks it is a good idea and that I should be tasked with the safety and security of others. (corporate building with 700 employees) and please fill out forms Dr.Valenti referenced a conversation we had 3 weeks ago by saying "Mr.RoQue, I spoke to you 3 weeks ago and you said you were fine" To which I responded "I haven't used the phrase 'I am fine' since my wife's cancer diagnosis 5 years ago" what I in fact said during that conversation was "the medication seems to be helping" I then shared the following: "You can't even remember how to pronounce my name correctly after 18 months, how do I even know that you (Dr.Valenti) know exactly who I am right now?" I also reminded her "why would I have said 'I am fine' when I literally told you I was in Florida for the death of my best friend?" Dr.Valenti also said I "shouldn't get disability just because my friend died" and Dr.Valenti also has stated that I've said things to her that I know that I didn't say. I know this because my wife is by me during my phone or telemental sessions with Dr.Valenti. When i asked why she does not leave voice-mail to confirm that she called me, she replied "I cannot leave detailed information on a voice-mail." When questioned further & explained that she does not need to leave details and that a professional courtesy voice-mail is fine, she gave me the exact same answer in regards to not leaving details. This attitude and answer is disingenuous and misleading at best. Luckily my wife was near and heard the conversation. I am considering hiring an attorney

Like many in mental doctors, she is quick to prescribe dangerous mind altering drugs. Plus, is quick to apply characterizations that will adversely patient. Plays mind games with patient. Has the typical attitude of mental doctors: shut up (don't waste doctor's time telling about concerns), dope up (take pharmaceuticals that financially benefit doctor) and then pay up (the doctor's bill, if applicable). That's all these type doctors are about: shut up, dope up and then pay up. They really don't fix patient's problems. Often, patient's problem is made worse or replaced with a worse one. Be very wary.

I just met Dr. Valenti for the first time. She is an absolute doll and smart too. Very sweet, patient and really took the time to listen. She made some excellent recommendations and wrote everything down for me (my memory isn't so good these days). Johns Hopkins really took a loss and Miami VA really got a good doctor. High recommend her to anyone needing a good psychiatrist.

It took me several weeks to obtain an appointment with Dr. Valenti however it was well worth the wait. I would recommend her to anyone looking for an intelligent and caring doctor.

She is absolutely wonderful. She really took the time to help our son and made many phone calls to help facilitate extra services that were really needed. she has made herself always available (including evenings). I can't begin to describe what a difference she has made in our lives. She is truly a wonderful doctor.
