Dr. April Kay Burton

Moved to Florida last year and needed to find a family doctor. Came across Dr April Burton and saw all the fantastic reviews. Scheduled my new patient appointment. She has great bedside manner and seems to really care. However, she is not someone who will allow you to advocate for yourself. For example. I’m 41 years old. I have taken a medication for 5 years at the same dose. I had a gap of about a month where I stopped taking it because I ran out and was in between doctors and states. Dr Burton thought it would be good idea to lower my dose because I’m someone who rather take little medication. I agreed. After 2 months I noticed a significant increase in my symptoms so I called the office to have her increase my medication back to the original starting dose. She told me no and that I need to get bloodwork done first which I have scheduled. I have never had to have bloodwork for this medication. I’ve been on the same dose 5 years. So instead of listening to my concerns, she dismissed… me and basically said this is how it is. Also, she gave me a lab slip to get bloodwork that had my yearly labs. Mind you, she can see everything in my chart from all my other appointments from my old doctor. She gave me a hepatitis blood panel rather than a thyroid which I’ve had checked every year since I was 18 due to significant family history. I had to call the office again and get them to add a thyroid test and get response was sure but I’m not sure if your insurance covers this but they cover a hepatitis test which I’ve never even had? I have never experienced such disorder and dismissive behavior from a physician. I’ve worked in the medical field for about 20 years as a medical assistant and I’m appalled at Lee Health and how they handle patient situations. When I have a concern with my body, I don’t want my doctor dismissing me. When I’m suffering in symptoms and request to be put back on my original starting dose, I get told no. Very unprofessional. I have also escalated this concern to the board. I believe it is very important that providers and patients have a mutual understanding of each other. This wasn’t it. I have since changed providers.

Dr April Burton is a young doctor with an incredibly bright future in front of her. I am 60 years old and have had quite a few doctors in my life. Dr Burton ranks right up there with the best ones I have ever had.
