Dr. Arthur Douglas Garfein, MD

Dr Garfien came very highly recommended for both one-on-one therapy and psychiatry. However, I found my experience with him to be anxiety inducing, condescending, and borderline exploitative. My initial phone call was brief. It sounded like he didn't really have the time for me, but he would try to make it work. Already I was placed in a defensive position, vying for his attention. I never had a chance to ask about rates, treatment plans/options, or expectations. He "squeezed" me in very early for an evaluation appointment, during which he asked me the standard questions, but offered no response to the answers given. No compassion, no acknowledgment, just some scribbles on a note pad and on to the next question. After 40 minutes he informed me our time was coming to an end and I finally got to ask MY questions about billing, treatment options, and expectations. Only then did I find out he charges 3x what my previous therapist charges and did not have a consistent timeslot available… for me. He told me he couldn't discuss treatment options because it was too early in my treatment. What??? Before I could press, 45 minutes had passed and he hurried me out of the office. I left with more questions than answers and a very raw feeling of being interrogated with no support. I felt like I'd just been beaten up and told to turn out my pockets. I received a bill for more than his stated hourly rate (again, the appointment was 45min) three weeks later.

Seeing Dr. Garfein has been life altering in the most positive way. Dr. Garfein is a very insightful, compassionate and caring doctor who is well-educated in his expertise. I would most certainly recommend him to anyone.

Dr. Garfein diagonse was correct. He is very serious. He never smiles. He won't shake your hand or give encouraging words. It was not a warm feeling in his office. I think he would be better off as just a Phychiatrist and not a therapist as well. He does not follow up or give you "homework" It didn't feel like he was supportive. If he is reading this a little warmth and a smile goes a long way.

This doctor was very rude to me. He did not taken a psychiatric history or talk to me. He ask what medications I was on and wrote prescriptions. I noticed his hands trembling constantly. When I left the room, I turned to close the door and Dr. Garfein was standing at his desk, visibly trembling and apparently crying, his hand over his eyes. It was pitiful. I reported him to the medical board.

Absolutely focused and dedicated to the well-bring of his patients. As a previous reviewer said, he's willing to make extra appointments during crisis periods. After seeing Dr. Garfein for severe depression and anxiety, I feel better now than I have in 20 years. My only (slightly) negative experience was with his accountant/billing, but that seems to be straightening out. Would recommend Dr. Garfein to anyone needing a compassionate, well-educated psychoanalyst.

Smart guy, extraordinary insight, nothing fazes him. Willing to give you extra sessions if you need them during crisis periods. Has helped me tremendously. And - he looks just like Sigmund Freud, which is kind of cool.

Dr.Garfein, inspite of his psycoanalist position, can suggest very practical and workable actions to very difficult situations.
