Patient account representative lied and told me the insurance company told them they had to code a preliminary bill as diagnostic and not routine. Makes a bid difference in my patient obligation. Insurance company said they don't tell physician office how to code anything (federal law), but require them to code accurately. When I got back with Gastroenterology Associates office the 2nd time (about 10 calls later) they agreed the insurance company did not tell them they had to code either way, but they determined the code to be diagnostic. (All I ask is they be honest with me, so that I can make a logical decision.) He confirmed that the procedure is the same either way, it is only the coding of diagnostic vs routine. His reply was that he has no control how my insurance company pays claims. Well la-di-da Mr. Patient Account Representative, I don't have any control how you code your billing statements, so I'll just say one more thing "good-bye."
