Dr. Athan Paul Kartsonis, MD

My partner started feeling bad in Dec 2021, was diagnosed with esophageal cancer (Nov 2022), admitted to Holmes & had an abdominal feeding tube put in place that day; she was at Holmes for 9 weeks (radiation & chemo), released home in Jan 2023 ... After 7 months of out-patient chemo, Dr. Kartsonis was brought in by Holmes Regional to put two stents into her throat area to "separate" two tumors & hopefully give her the ability to eat solid food (none since Nov 2022) ... After said stent procedure, we were told that she had contracted a lung infection during the operation (initially diagnosed as MRSA, then "oh no - not that") ... She was released with no infection treatment/medications, AND no follow-up (procedure re-visit, or otherwise) was scheduled ... She was able to eat for about 10 days, but her breathing got worse & worse, until suddenly one night I had to call an ambulance ... She was taken to Palm Bay Hosp. (closer than Holmes), she was intubated for over four days, kept in ICU… for another 10 days, sent to Life Care Center (2+ weeks), then to Holmes for another 2+ weeks, then sent home where she died (on oxygen) less than a week later ... After the ICU, every stop ended with "she needs more care than we can give her" ... Dr. Kartsonis? Never saw/talked to him after his initial, pre-operation visit to her room at Holmes (late July? 2023) where he blew into said room, asked me who I was (never stopped, or looked at me), talked/examined her (less than 5 min), then left, set up/performed the procedure & washed his hands of us ...

Dr. Kartsonis has been my trusted Doctor for several years. I recommend him to all my friends. He is kind and caring and that makes him #1 as far as I am concerned. He is also listed as one of the "Top Docs" which is absolutely correct.

I was diagnosed by my ENT with GERD and needed follow up with a gastroenterologist. Since I had been a patient of Dr. Kartsonis since 1993 I opted to make an appointment with him. The woman on the phone told me I needed to go back to the ENT. I did so and was referred to a gastroenterologist that is in the ENTs network. Can anyone explain why this is a reasonable course of action.

He took care of my issue professionally, efficiently , caringly and with great skill. This Doctor knows his business! 5 stars +.

Dr. Kartsonis is one of the most caring and thorough doctors I have ever met. He has worked diligently to help figure out what is causing my pain. His bedside manner is excellent. Highly recommend for an GI needs.

I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Kartsonis. He listens, takes his time, and truly cares about his patients. He also does whatever it takes to diagnose and remediate your health problems. He’s just the very best there is.

Best staff- first time for me. Odd to say it was pleasant, but they really made me very comfortable.

First impression was compassionate, however was talked into a colonoscopy which I did not want since my ct scan showed diverticulitis & knew this meant an increased risk for perforation of the colon (which I reminded him of my friend who experienced this after he had scoped her & two days later was in ER needing surgery & a colostomy bag for the next year). I Called & cancelled appointment for procedure & was told by nurse he would not have me as a patient & therefore would not prescribe antibiotics to treat my diverticulitis flare up since I was not doing a colonoscopy. This felt like blackmail! Being a retired nurse myself, I was definitely not impressed with assistants on the phone after being spoken to in a very condescending manner. I'm happy to say I am not going back there.

Best staff and doctor experience I have. Love them.
