Dr. Audrey Maria Rushin, MD

I’m incredibly disappointed. I’ve seen this doctor for almost two years and after going to college in another state, where I was unable to find a new provider within the semester because of the pandemic and unable to see this doctor because of licensing restrictions, I come back to be unable to get an appointment for several months. I was only away for one semester. I also am unable to have my prescription refilled even temporarily. This means that after years of being on an antidepressant I must take daily I will be going cold turkey. I understand the demands on such services right now, but it is also understood stopping these drugs abruptly is very dangerous. We’ve even spoken about this. At the least I would hope to get a temporary prescription or a referral to another doctor, but I am left with no resources and now am going through withdrawal alone. I can’t even reach the doctor. I know times are tough for all but I feel quite abandoned. I also recognize why one does not want to… prescribe without seeing a patient recently (within the semester), but in this case as it is an emergency for me I would hope it would be possible to find even five minutes or, again, simply help to get me safe until the next available date several months from now. My drug is not one that is heavily abused and I am also not an abuser, which should be clear from our time together. I would also like to recognize my fault for not scheduling sooner, but also imagine this is not unusual for people in my position as I did not have much choice regarding the pandemic and leaving the state. I hope no one else finds themselves in this situation.

Dr. Rushin was unprofessional and disrespectful to me in her treatment of me as a patient in a very demeaning and slightful way. When I asked her how my diagnosis met the criteria of bipolar she didn't answer the question and just said, "you are bipolar". I asked again thinking I may have not been clear in how I thought and expected the answer to my question should just outline how the criteria of the diagnosis was met. Again she replied that "your diagnosis is bipolar and you are bipolar". Any health professional would explain to the patient how symptoms are expressed and would explain how these symptoms fit the criteria for a disorder as part of the diagnosis process. By her statements she made me feel that I had no place to raise my concerns as a patient, and that she had the right to tell me that I should just accept what I was told. To anyone seeking professional mental health treatment I would say you won't get that with this doctor.

I won't be seeing Dr. Rushin again. I understand that she is likely overworked and that the pandemic has put an intense amount of strain on mental health professionals, but, detailing one's personal history is not easy and I would hope providers could have some bedside manner. Unfortunately, Dr. Rushin was judgmental and dismissive, at best. I won't be seeing her again.

I left my appointment feeling like I was in the novel Slaughterhouse-Five. I was just an animal to be processed. I understand there is a mental health crisis in the U.S. and psychiatrists are over worked, underpaid, and generally maxxed out. I do not feel that justifies making a patient feel a complete lack of empathy on their provider’s side. I was told curtly that, despite working with my PCP for over a year, (not to mention waiting 4 months for an appointment with a psychiatrist), that my previous treatment plan was entirely wrong and that I would be starting a completely new one with no support network. When I left the office I felt bewildered, lost, and like simply another number. I feel like this is a failure on multiple levels of care.

I do not recommend this psychiatrist. She is extremely rude. I feel sorry for her patients that don't know any better.

I have been a patient of Dr. Rushin's for four years. I find her to be extremely courteous, understanding, and highly professional. She is always available to address any situations that may arise. I would highly recommend her.
