Dr. Avani R Lakhani, MD

Abusive. Incompetent. Google corrected her misinformation for me. Breast exam was far too long. Get the extra eyes out of my exam room. Billed me twice, nice try.

Two years ago, I made the unfortunate decision to go to this practice, and although I paid the bill promptly with a check, years later they claimed they only received $0.75 for some reason. It seemed like a ridiculous amount, and I was puzzled by their incompetence. After much back-and-forth, I provided documentation proving my full payment for the visit, and they acknowledged their mistake, promising to rectify it. However, instead of fixing the issue, they sent me a text on their app weeks later, still demanding payment for the visit or it will be sent to collections. When I checked my online statement, I was appalled to find that they had not corrected their records as it still said I had only paid $0.75. The representative handling my case through the app even sent a screenshot, intending to show they had entered the full payment, but it inadvertently revealed the disorganization and errors in their system. Shockingly, they had split my single check payment, wrongly attributing… $0.75 to the office visit and the rest to a completely different date when I never went in for a visit. It was clear they are doing something shady with the billing. When I raised the issue again and pointed out their error, they simply shut me down, refusing to address my concerns any further. Their dismissive response was deeply unprofessional, leaving me frustrated and without any resolution. I urge everyone to steer clear of this doctor's office as their sketchy billing practices and unhelpful staff make them entirely untrustworthy. Don't risk your time, money, and peace of mind with this establishment. Seek care elsewhere, where your well-being is genuinely valued, and your concerns are treated with respect and competence.

I give 1 star to Dr. Lakhani specifically with the hope of awakening her to necessary change regarding BEDSIDE MANNER and FOLLOW-THROUGH (COMPETENCE). Allow me to over-share so that you can AVOID AVOID AVOID Lakhani. I was seen by Dr. Lakahni in 2020 regarding infection(s). First visit, Lakhani was accompanied by a young woman (assume intern). With my pants off and legs open, she asked me "Do you have a history of sexual assault?" ALARMING question for this vulnerable position, no? My answer is "yes." This question, position and an unnecessary/unknown person made me UNCOMFORTABLE. This appointment ended with a prescription for yeast infection cream and ME LEAVING A NOTE SPECIFICALLY NOT TO ASK ME THIS QUESTION AGAIN, I.E. "PLEASE NOTE MY ANSWER WAS AFFIRMATIVE. Do NOT ask again." Second appointment, I arrive after LOTS of research with the belief I now have 2 infections, yeast and BV. I told Lakhani about having 2 infections and she asserted, "That's impossible. You can't have both… yeast and BV at the same time." I pushed back, "I believe it is possible." She was visibly and unmistakably IRRITATED by my questioning of her knowledge/authority. Pants off and legs open: I hear, "DO YOU HAVE A HISTORY OF SEXUAL ASSAULT?" EXCUSE ME!?!? WHY/HOW did this question become immediately relevant AGAIN? Did I NOT leave a note about this topic specifically? (I DID.) I still feel certain Lakhani asked this question AGAIN because she did not like my questioning of her authority. Most awkward and uncomfortable vaginal exam of my life!!! #ptsd She prescribed me a minor dose of antibiotics for BV and ignored my yeast infection. As Lakhani exited the room, I looked at her directly and said "Thank you. I appreciate you." DESPITE disagreeing and feeling manipulated. Lakhani said NOTHING. SHE SAID NOTHING to me, and left the room. 1 week later: the antibiotics weren't strong enough and my infection persisted . . . AFTER: Because Lakhani was incompetent and I was too uncomfortable to return to her, I struggled privately with symptoms, shame, questioning, and looking for a new provider. I found eventually found Catherine via Maui Lani on Ma'a ST. Catherine is SO NICE and SO UNDERSTANDING. She reviewed my history and told me that my original dose of antibiotics was WAY too small. Effectively, all Lakhani's dose did was make my infection more resistant to antibiotics! PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. P.S. It's totally possible to have both yeast and BV at the same time. Someone tell Dr. Lakhani.

After suffering for many years with my health deteriorating, I finally found Dr. Lakhani. What a blessing!!! She was listened closely to what I was experiencing and understood. She was very efficient, gentle and compassionate in all of her care. I haven't been this healthy and energetic in decades! I hope many others are able to experience what "health care" really means. Mahalo nui loa.

She is not very accommodating outside of her clinic all the time & prefers an appointment.. I guess to make more money...

I found Dr. Lakhani as I was researching OB/GYN doctors on Maui, her qualifications mentioned that she is the most experienced GYN surgeon on Maui. I made my appointment with her and was very pleased with the level of care. Dr. Lakhani is professional, competent, kind, and respectful. And so is her staff. What impressed me most was the way she listened to my concerns and then explained the details of my condition and the appropriate tests and treatments that would be best for me. I was also really happy that she confidently recommended the least invasive treatment option and that the whole in-office procedure was smooth and calm and painless. And another outstanding service from Dr. Lakhani is that she always hands me a copy of my lab reports in addition to a written summary of the appointment, no other doctor has ever shared copies of lab reports with me. That says a lot about her, she wants her patients to be well informed and empowered. I really trust Dr. Lakhani's decisions and… skills and overall philosophy of healthcare.

I was referred to Dr. Lakhani by several girlfriends who also are patients of her's, after a scary experience with Maui Memorial Hospital. She saw me immediately and I have been a patient of her's ever since. I ended up having to have surgery with her and she was so comforting, putting me at ease right before surgery and constantly making herself available to me during my recovery. She is very straight forward and honest (no sugar coating with her) , while still being compassionate. I would refer anyone of girlfriends to her without hesitation.

I would strongly recommend Dr Lakhani. She is thorough, personable, and very helpful with my experience. It's difficult to find an OBGYN who you feel you comfortable and trusting with, but I found I was able to do so with Dr Lakhani. Staff was very helpful and accommodating to me as well. I would recommend her to anyone looking for OBGYN care.

I do not recommend this doctor. Dr repeatedly recommended aggressive treatment without mentioning viable less invasive options offered by 2nd and 3rd opinions. I experienced tremendous difficulty with their accounting department, trying repeatedly to make a payment only to be told repeatedly not to pay yet as they were reviewing and appealing with the insurance company. After 5 months of countless attempts at getting a straight answer from a helpless staff received a certified letter stating they would no longer provide service due to nonpayment! Dr. would never return my calls.

I can't give Dr. Lakhani and her staff enough praise for creating a professional, knowledgeable, caring and friendly environment in their office.From the first phone call to the follow up email messages delivering test results (great electronic addition) my experience with Dr. Lakhani and her staff impressed me so much that I wanted to spread the word that if you are looking for an OB/GYN you definitely should see Dr. Lakhani.
