Dr. Avram R Gold, MD

Insists that all mental (and most physical) health problems are due to snoring. Naturally, he is the "only one" who knows the "truth" about this. "Even if you don't think you're snoring, you are - just at a high enough pitch that you can't hear it." Has encouraged people to go off of their psychiatric medication because he believes it interferes with sleep, leading to snoring, which is the "actual cause" of their illness. Do not go to this doctor.

I recently went for my initial appointment to have a consultation regarding possible sleep apnea. The appointment was far and above what I was anticipating. My initial intake was done by the Fellow Dr. “B” who himself was friendly, informative and comprehensive in his history taking. DrB then presented my case very concisely to Dr Gold who went on to inform me of the work up and follow up. He took time to answer questions and was a true professional- I felt confident leaving his office and could sense what a wonderful mentor he was to Dr B doing his fellowship.

This is the most unprofessional, arrogant and angry doctor I've ever met. There are many good doctors in the same field. Find a different one. There's no reason to be treated rudely and listen to a doctor shouting around his office, intimidating people. I am surprised at Stony Brook for having him on staff.

No follow-up. Diagnosed me prior to testing me. Think he diagnoses and treats everyone identically. Never sent report to my referring doctor. Terrible. Go elsewhere if you have any kind of serious issue that you want studied.

Dr. A. Gold is a really thoughtless and careless doctor. He has no interest in his patient and no empathy for their problems. I have no idea why the university tolerates him. I have no idea why anyone would see him a second time.

Excellent doctor in the field of sleep medicine. Readily responds to any questions or concerns in between appointments. Really seems to care. Highly recommended.

Spends more time talking about sleep disorders and not listening to the patient. Other pulmonologists state that he is highly likely to diagnose you with a problem that you may not have.
