Dr. Barry Cofer was recommended to us by a friend of a friend when I was expressing my 20 year old son's desire to have the Nuss Procedure. I phoned his office and was informed that he was a pediatric surgeon and the age limit was 18. Discouraged, I asked if there was a recommendation for an adult surgeon in San Antonio. Dr. Cofer's nurse returned my call stating that he would consult with my son. We were beyond excited. My son's physical appearance, labored breathing and previous history lead Dr. Cofer to move forward with preliminary testing. The testing proved that my son had severe pectus excavatum. Surgery was explained in great detail and performed. The hospital, staff and surgeon were absolutely amazing! We were kept very well informed of what to expect at all times, any changes were prompt and effective. The incredible level of care has proven to continue after discharge. I had to call after hours and my call was returned within 20 minutes, with expedient… results. Why did I title this review life changing? My son was a smoker prior to surgery. Knowing a camera would be used for the procedure, I asked if the doctor would take a picture of my son's lungs. He agreed but mentioned that he probably would not be able to see much due to his age. Unfortunately/fortunately that was not the case. The lungs were covered in black tracks. He stated "Your son has smoked for many years or been raised in Manhattan his entire life". When my son saw the photo he said, "I'm done!" Truly, life changing! I would not hesitate to refer Dr. Cofer as a surgeon!!
